I posted the same link on the "electronics". It could well be his amp, the 25L15 he used with Hank Thompson was Hank's. Actually all of them were. So this might be the one Bob White got when he had left the Brazos Valley Boys? I have doubts about it being the 77th amp Bob Crooks built, rather it being a 77th of the 50L15's. The design suggests, that this one is ca. -58. After the first batch, Bob Crooks was changing the design and models constantly, so his amps are really hard to date unless you have all the original tags and paperwork.
In any case, these are killer sounding amps, who ever buys it will be a happy camper. |

I just scored the cabinet and speaker, minus the electronics of Wayne Burdick's 25L15, #1023. It's currently over at Standel waiting for some new electronics. |

Jussi, no, Tim Maag thought I should about call up Wayne to see if they were sitting in his garage somewhere, but I'm not sure I want to do that. The last time I called him was around 1990, when I wanted to buy his Bigsby. He said it was out in the garage and that he didn't want to sell it. I got the impression he wasn't too happy about me trying to buy his guitar, so I wonder what Ron Middlebrook said that changed his mind.
Be that as it may, perhaps he doesn't want to know that his amp got turned into an extension cabinet.
What I want is the exact same electronics that were used in the first Standel amp that Danny McKinney made for Buddy, which used the original tone circuit. It was the best sounding amp I've heard. |

Hello Jussi
Hello Chas
Danny sent the 2 new 100L15's I ordered last year, Friday and I have been locked away in tone-land. Amazing sound. Missed dinner the last couple of nights.

Hello Ron, so those were for you. I spent a wonderful afternoon with your amps and my Orville and later, my Real Reverb, while it was being tested. I didn't want to let them out of my studio. Congratulations!! |

Chas & Ron, so does that 100L15 use a quad set of power tubes? I assume the "100" means the power output range? I'd love to hear Buddy's sound with that amp. I'm grateful, ( to my bandmates for keeping an intelligent volume level ) that I don't need all that wattage, the 25L15 is enough for me. Otherwise, I'd be in line for one of those 100L15's. |

Jussi, as I understand it, the 100L15 uses the original Standel tone circuits and the "power section" (I want to say gain stage, but I don't know enough about electronics to know if that's the correct term) is the same as was used in the Macintosh amplifiers. (I still have the Macintosh 275 that I bought in 1968, evidently it's worth around $5k).
The beauty of having 100 watts is that it's there if you need it. It's like when listening to classical music on the stereo, most of the time the amp is just loafing along, but if there's a sudden swell or "event", and there's not enough wattage to deliver it comfortably....... the listening experience is compromised.
By the same token, have you ever noticed what the steel guitar sounds like in a mix where the engineer gave the guitar and the steel guitar the same amount of "meter". The steel guitar sounds like it's down in the mix, because it is. The steel seems to need to push a lot of air to really take advantage of what it sounds like and for that reason, 100 watts is handy to have around.
Most of the amps I use are in the 35 watt range, Ron's amps are spectacular and of course, now I want a pair.[This message was edited by chas smith on 11 March 2004 at 10:47 AM.] |

Jussi
chas,
I knew I was in good hands when Danny told me he was testing things in your studio. Thanks!
Jussi, your experience and writing on the Forum, helped my decision to buy one.
Yea, these 2 amps use a quartet of 6L6 tubes each. Plenty of power, more than I will ever need. If I need more, it will have to be through the board/PA.
The original project was for one amp just like the one built for Mr. Emmons. Then we added a powered extension. As things evolved, Danny and I agreed to two identical amps. The cost was about the same. I like to play in stereo, I like to play my Strat, and Stringmaster. A pair of amps gives me lots of flexibility. I will post some pictures soon.

Wow Ron, I never considered myself experienced, but your comment sure makes me feel good Sounds like you have the ultimate amplification there now!! Wish I'll have a chance to hear it someday!
Chas, I hear what you're sayin' and I indeed have noticed that couple of times, but never had the problem myself. Maybe I've been just plain lucky to work with soundmen who actually listen to your ideas of the mix.
Had that 100 watt version been available in 1999 when I bought mine, I might have opted for it too, just for the heck of it.
With all this being said, looks like Bob White's amp didn't sell!! [This message was edited by Jussi Huhtakangas on 11 March 2004 at 10:35 PM.] |
