Two steel players in the same band?

Just wonderin here? Has there ever been a band that included two steel players? Ive seen bands with 2 drummers, 2 or 3 or 4 six string players, 2 fiddles , multiple horns, and so on. 2 steel guitars ive never seen. Bob

Re Winkler hired 3 steel players at once, but he told us all to play other instruments and leave our steel guitars at home.

Here's a story about an accidental 2 steel gig. Band leader for western swing band Lost Weekend, Don Burnham, calls me to come and play snare drum and brushes for his regular Wednesday gig a at Paul's Saloon in San Francisco. When I get there it turns out Don has accidentaly booked Bobby Black and Vance Terry to play the gig on Steel. So Don says "What the heck, why don't you both play". At no point during that evening did I hear one iota of ego coming from either side of me just fabulous steel guitar playing. At the end of it my girlfriend said I played georguos drums so I went home a very happy camper. BW

A couple of Sundays ago a friend of mine who's a bass player asked me to bring my steel to their big jam session and play. Unknown to me, the acoustic guitar player had asked another player (Rick Mann) to come also. Rick and I are good friends so we set up our steels on both sides of the bandstand and proceeded to have one of the best times ever. We did twin versions of Steel Guitar Rag, Sleepwalk, and a couple of others requests. It was a great night and we're going to do it again soon....Have a good 'un...JH

Louie Thompson and I played steels together in the Canyon Country Band here in ApacheJunction Az. He has since moved back to Michg.

In Hank Thompsons early years he carried 2 steel players. I think that Pee Wee Withewing was one of them. I hope I'm right. db

The late great Gene Crownover and I both played steel guitar with Bob Wills at the same time.

I got to see both Emmons and Day with Ray Price some years ago in Charlotte NC. I had went over to vist with Ray Crisp (Fiddle) as he and I use to do The Cousin Wilbur TV show. after the show Emmons was trying out a black Emmons guitar.The were using Sho-Buds during the show.

Reece,did you ever know a guy named Fred Gamble? He sang with Wills. Anyway, he had a little club here in OKC, it was an after hours club then. He would have some of the the old pickers come and do an all nite jam. I got to know Crownvoer and Famous Amos Hedricks and a lot of the guys. We would go over after our gigs and just sit in awe listening to those guys and getting to pick with them.I sure do miss Fred and the guys,God rest thier souls. Hope to meet you someday. db

When there was room on the stage at the Jake Hooker show (before Dicky Overbey got sick), Bobby Flores would set up his 65 wrap next to Dickys 66 bolt and they worked up some pretty cool twin stuff. Hope Dicky will be back soon to do it again.

back in november I got the great fortune to set side by side with one of the best E9 players i ever heard. his name is Pat Heller
we started off the night playing the intro to way to survive in harmony WITH CHIMES!!!!!!! I think I peed a little..great night of pickin.

PLUMB COUNTRY carries 2 steel players. Well, O K, 1 and a 1/4. Skeeter Black and myself most nights. We are often joined by the great BILL DEARMORE from Belton TX. Bill used to run the road with or friend Gene Watson.

Buddy Emmons and Bobby Garrett both set their steels on stage when they were with Ernest Tubb, When Ernest came out, Buddy switched to lead guitar. Jody.

Sometime about '74, Jim Ed Brown had two steel players for a short time. It was just before Hank Corwin left to pursue session work. As I remember it (and I sometimes remember incorrectly) the new steel player was Mike Smith.

Fairly recently there was a reunion of the the Shorty Joe band which included Bobby Black and Pee Wee Whitewing at the Saramento Western Swing Society monthly dance. I was not able to be there myself but I was told that Bobby and Pee Wee were able to play dual steel ensemble parts that they had had together 50 years earlier from memory!!!! Shouldn't somebody make this happen at least one more time? Morrrell? DeWitt? BW

The best I ever heard was a band called MoonShine that was playing in Seven Points Texas when I heard them..two amateurs by the name of Junior Knight and Gary Hogue were both steel players in that band and I believe the legendary Donnie McDuff was on guitar among other greats in the Dallas area. Partner that was some kinda cool.

Silver Threads & Golden Needles was the
song. Steel Players were.........
I'm guessing Dan Dugmore and ????
I may have a copy of that somewhere;
will have to look around.

I saw Linda Ronstadt at the Armadillo in Austin in about 1976 she had Dan Dugmore,and Ed Black.
