I thought it was too. But on the following link, there is an intro and break and it is Bobby Garrett according to Ricky's site. Sounds just like Buddy to me.

The note (harmony) on the 4th beat of the 1st measure don't sound like the way Buddy did it.

Dan McMillian and Ricky are incorrect.
"Half A Mind" was recorded June 11, 1958, and Buddy Emmons was the steel guitarist. Also on the date were Johnny Johnson, Grady Martin, Floyd Cramer, Billy Byrd, Jack Drake, and Ferris Coursey.

Roger Miller (who wrote the song!) also did a great version with Buddy Emmons on Steel. It's on the album "A Trip To The Country".

| Also. It was cut with a 8 string E9 tuning, with the top string being an E requiring the the 4th note of the intro to be a bar slant! au |

I know it shows my bias, but I don't believe anybody played it quite like BC. One good cut of it was on those old Jeannie Shepard Vids I saw with Harley James years ago.
Also on a more recent tape I got from a friend here.
Mr Seymore did MUCH justice to it on one of his CDs as well.
What a song.

I have "The Ernest Tubb Collection with Guests" and on that recording it most definitely is Buddy Emmons, at least according to ET. It is my favorite ET song and that intro and turnaround is classic steel at its very best.
In case you've never heard this double album recording (Step One Records) it features Ernest with guest vocalists and guest steel players, such as Jimmie Crawford, Speedy West, Johnny Cox and others. It's a very entertaining recording.
I would also be remiss if I didn't mention the great playing Lynn Owsley did on this album. Good stuff!
