I prefer to carry only as much cash as necessary when I go to the USA, relying on Visa & MC for buying stuff.
I won't be buying anything as costly as a guitar or amp, but expect to consider some CDs/learning materials/pickups, etc. Since (I think) most of the vendors are small business persons, what percentage would be able to accept Visa/MC, or would most require cash?
It costs a bit to buy $US here, but can cost a lot if I need to get cash from a machine down there!
TIA for any suggestions.

Most vendors I'm aware of don't have Merchant Accounts for Visa/MC due to the cost to the merchant. PayPal online is an exception. I know Herby Wallace, Scotty, and Jeff Newman take CC's.
I do accept American Express Traveler's Cheques. Perhaps other companies issue them also. I'd advise you to go that route.

The debit machines in most US hotels, and elsewhere, take my Canadian Debit Card and return US cash, charging the day's current exchange rate to my account.
Travelers Checks are another option. The hotels cash them. |

Doug, when a person has to deal with the banking systems in 2 different countries, it's not unusual for each to charge a fee for the "conversion". I just want to avoid excessive costs.

Thanks everyone for your replies & comments. Just exchanged e-mails with Joey Ace and currently he has found no extra charges on ATM withdrawals other than the going exchange rate.

Fold a couple of hundred dollar bills, and stick them in your hat, your sock, pin them to your underwear, or whatever.
Usually, where small retailers abound, cash is king...and will sometimes get you discounts.

Ok, so I'm at the World Series of Poker at Binion's, 1999. Several individuals from Ireland and the European mainland. $600-$1200 game with maybe 8" stacks of hundreds. How did they do it? I didn't bother to ask. I did get to play $4-$8 with Wilford Brimley and I saw Yasmine Bleeth. At least I think Yasmine was there that year. Or maybe it was '96 or one of those other years.

| I went to the Texas show last year along with a friend. He bought a product from George L and they took his credit card number down and ran it through when they got home. He tried to buy some product from Jeff Newman and he said he could not do that. They had no phone line to do a credit cart transaction and he would have to call when they got back to their office. I have wondered how businesses deal with credit cards with no phone line especially if purchasing something like a new guitar. I do not like carrying a bunch of cash and I would guess they would not want a personal check. I plan on buying a new guitar this year and have given this some thought on how to handle money. I guess I will cross that bridge when the show rolls around....Paul King |

Yep,
We got some of them magic money machines "down here". Came in last week on the afternoon stagecoach, by golly. 
I seem to get a better deal on items like picks, bars, CD's, cords, using cash. May have something to do with sales taxes and credit card fees.

| I am wondering about taxes at the Texas show. When I have ordered from out of state before I never paid sales tax. How does it work if a vendor comes to Texas and we buy a product from them, do we pay sales tax? Just thought I might ask someone who is a vendor at the shows how taxes are handled...Paul King |

Carter Steel Guitars accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, AMEX, cashier's checks, money orders, travelers checks, and cash (and we will at the Texas show, as well).
Note that we charge the same, whether you pay by credit card, money order, cashier's check, travelers checks, or by cash.
For all items purchased from us at the Texas show, we are paying the Texas sales tax. Or, on items over $100, we'll pay either the sales tax or freight, whichever applies.
