Yup, that's the "Big E" we all love! It just don't get no better than that.

Thanks for this "humbling" moment.

Thanks Henry, great stuff. Doesn't BE use palm blocking for the most part, at least that is what I heard? I'm amazed at how fast and clean he can run changes, while still having really smooth voice leading. I'm torn between trying to go into finger blocking or stay with palm blocking, cause it's hard to play jazz with just palm blocking alone I think.

Yup! The "Worlds Foremost Steel Guitarist"
that clip is one reason why its a well deserved title!
Jesse, Buddy doesnt really finger block. He uses a combination of palm blocking and muting some strings with the tip of his right ring finger. Thats how he gets it soooo clean. Not an easy technique, but with some effort, cleanliness and speed will greatly improve.

Henry,

Are you aware that Buddy also did a recording with the late, great Lenny Breu? I use to have the album, but I have since lost it. The album, not my mind. Ha! Ha! Lenny was a guitarist who made the Jazz scene in the late nineteen-sixtys/early nineteen-seventys. He had a style of playing that blended very well with Buddy. Lenny played three parts on guitar simultaneously. He used his thumb to play the Bass part. His first three fingers for chords, and his pinky finger played all the lead parts. And, he played them effortlessly, and perfectly! Lenny also recorded with Jerry Reed doing Jerry's song, "The Claw". That is a song that you have to hear to believe it! Anyway, if you can obtain a copy of Buddy and Lenny, you'll be blown away, just like I was. I don't remember the name of the album, but hopefully someone here on the Forum will know what it is, and will give you the info to obtain a copy of it!
I use to "palm block" all the time a number of years ago, but recently, I found myself lifting my entire hand up off the strings while I pick. The more I play this way, the faster it seems to get, not to mention the accuracy I seem to have acheived. Just thought I'd mention that!

The Mp3 is Buddy Emmons solo's from an album called "It's The First Time". It featured Jimmy Bryant, Buddy Emmons, Doug Jernigan, Curly Chalker, Maurice Anderson, Julian Tharpe, Speedy West, Jimmy Day, Hal Rugg, Lloyd Green. My all time favorite steel guitar jam album.

Jeez! I just had a brainstorm! I was thinking how great it would be to have a poster-size of thie pic to put into the front lobby of my studio. Framed of course, and signed by the Big E himself. Someone should tell him to make and offer for sale, posters. Maybe not just this one, but offer other poses too, signed! As well as all the other greats! I'd do just about anything to have posters like that! Wouldn't something like that be great? Just an idea...., I'm full of 'em. Ideas that is!
