My good friend Harley Brendal passed away four years ago after a long battle with cancer. He was such a great player whose talent remained widely unknown, simply because he never pursued a career as a pro, he always kept his day job beside his music. He was a close friend of another big name, the incomparable Buzz Evans.
Harley's personality and talent deserves not to be forgotten and I am proud that I have known him!
Thanks, Harley
Walter

Walter.Sure sorry to hear about Harley.I didn't know he has died.I knew him since 1962.Got to know and jam with Buzz Evans in the early 70's. Buzz used to kid and say he was going to break Harleys fingers. You are corret,he did not want to play for a living.Took up welding in Billings,Mt.his home town.He taught me so much heavy stuff on the C6th i almost got to where i coulden't hold a job.If any steel plyer could have spooked Chalker it would have been Harley, and what a wonderful person he was.Thanks.Tracy |

I did not have the chance to me Mr. Brendal myself but he was the first steel player that my dad ever met. They met at a small music store in Billings call Broadwater Music. He impressed my dad enough that a couple years later my dad picked up a Sho-Bud S10 at a pawn shop on a visit to Nashville. As I recall my dad did run into Mr. Brendal upon occation as my dad was a pipe fitter and they ended up on some of the same jobs. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Harley and doing a lot of jamming with him when I was touring in Montana. At the time he was playing for a man named "Smokey", but I can't remember his last name, possibly someone will remember.
I can certainly attest to the fact that Harley was an exceptional player, and a great person. |
