Congrats to RR!
I'm sorry to say I'm not as excited as most of you about the exposure for PSG. I last saw Clapton about a decade ago and his opening act was "Buckwheat Zydico". It was a cool performance, the crowd dug it, and Eric even came out and jammed for their last tune.
Thankfully that exposure didn't create a boom in Accordian sales. |

When I saw Merle Haggard with Clint Black back about 10 years ago, I didn't conclude it was Merle jumping on anybody's bandwagon. Just a great show by a couple of good country singers at, like you say, different points in their career.
It was a sell-out crowd that gave Merle a standing-O merely for walking out on stage. Clint actually had to perform before he got his. 
There will be a lot of Clapton fans that learn about steel -- it's not just for country anymore.

I heard a story from an amp tech guy in LA that he dropped off a Marshall plexi at a studio for Robert. Robert proceded to dime (everything on 10) the thing and started playing. After a couple minutes a guy busts through the door to find out what and who was playing. Eric Clapton evidently liked what he heard.

Ron is correct. The steel is not just for country anymore. The time has come for guys like us to learn how to play rock and blues, if we have not already done so.
In my opinion, it is not necessary to change to the sacred steel tuning in order to play that style, but it IS necessary to use a 12 string instrument to get the bass notes.

Mike, Are you sure about that ? Last I checked there was only a half step difference in the low range between a standard C6 and standard U12.

| Well, I don't think anyone should feel like they have to play blues or anything else, if they don't want to. Bob, 10-string C6 is about as low as a 12-string, but it doesn't span as many notes as a 12-string. Both RR's 13-string SS E7 and a uni span the identical range from the 5th below the lowest root to two steps above the 2nd root above that. But I think it's more in the lay out of the intervals and chords. C6 has closer intervals designed for jazz. SS E7 has the major chord intervals which are more convenient for strumming and power chords. The Uni has some of both. You can certainly play blues/rock on any of these. But for some people one lays out better than another. This can lead to an interesting discussion as to why that is, as long as we don't try to say which is best for everyone. |

Ouch.
Regardless of your musical taste, having a steel guitar fronted band playing stadiums is worth cheering about.
