I sent one of my ZB's to Billy Knowles to have compensaters installed on strings 1&7, he then sent the guitar on to Greg Jones, who fine tuned the pedals & KL's. The guys did a great job.!! The compensaters work perfect, and the guitar plays and looks like new! Thanks guys, for a job well done. If anyone needs any work done on their guitars I highly recommend them both. |

that is a ringing endorsement from a man who used to own the company!! (and who in my opinion still "owns" the quintessential ZB "tone")
Greg did a great job on my ZB as well.[This message was edited by Dave Van Allen on 19 January 2004 at 06:54 PM.] |

Tom............ya got me started in a long way around by listening to all those hair standin' moves ya did way back..
Greg has got the talent for the ol' Z.Bs.to live again for another bunch of guys who never heard a "real" steel guitar.

Tom, thank you for the nice compliments!!! It was a real pleasure getting to work on this guitar and PLAY it!!!
The guitar folks, is a SD-11, 4 floors and 7 knees, black lacquer w/pearl inlays in the aprons and neck. Tom told me the guitar was built in 83'. This is the only one built like it. He eliminated the turnbuckles to free up space at the changer end. Also used the same rod for 2 changes on one string. Example: E-F and E-F#, 4th string, both on seperate knees. Tom had tried to explain to me how it worked but it took looking at it to make sense to me. And it does work. The compensators work really slick. Billy did a great job on them. He also made a new nut roller. His machine work is top notch.
Play like a ZB should? You bet!!! Sound like a ZB should? You bet again!!!! This guitar sounds wonderful through my 59' Fender Bassman w/JBL D-130. If you all want to know what the guitar sounds like, listen to Dwight Yoakum's "The Heart That You Own" and "I Sang Dixie". This is the guitar on those recordings and many more. Of course, Tom could pull good tone out of a piece of bailing wire stretched across a 2x4 and playing through a feed sack!!! LOL.
Tom, thanks again!!! It was an honor to tweak on this guitar!!! Hope you do take it to Dallas this year.
Greg

Well, Greg, that's quite an endorsement of your work. It sounds like you did a great job and had a great time doing it.
So that I might imagine how that ZB sounds I'll whip on your CD, "My Brand of Steel".
And, Tom, if you can haul that ZB to Scotty's we'll get together and help you get it up on stage. Careful, though, I understand they are tough on the lower back.

I have a mid-70's wood body emmons D-10 that was rebuilt by Billy Knowles and it is immaculate and plays great. Thats saying a lot considering my main axe is a Zumsteel! Billy really does fine work.

Hi folks,
Greg Jones works on those ZB's from the heart, not only do they shine and play well, he also sprinkles a little of himself onto them,,never seen anyone with a love for ZB's like Greg has. He is one fine Steel tech, and as well as a fine person. Not to mention a Great Steel player.
And Mr Brumley,,,not words to describe him, his steel playing say's it best.

Thanks folks for the nice compliments!!! I can't help but love these old ZB's.
Ron, I tried to capture some of that "I Sang Dixie" tone on "The Fugitive" cut on my CD. That song is one of Brumley's older SD-11 ZB's ( the brown one I had in Lexington this year), through the 59' Bassman reissue with a JBL. It may be close, but its no cigar!!! Tom just HAS the tone!!!!
Click the link below, this is my brown ZB SD-11, pic taken at the Lexington show.

I don't know if I ever dare sit down to a ZB again. Kevin, thanks for the opportunity to try yours out. The string spacing is just a little larger than my Emmons, and it felt real good, and it sounded real good. Now I'm never gonna be happy... :>) [This message was edited by Ray Minich on 23 January 2004 at 04:14 PM.] |
