From what I've been able to glean, about 50,000 worldwide is a reasonably good "guesstimation".

about 30,000 worlwide I have heard a number of times. this would not suprise me if close. When one considers there are probably 10's of millions of guitar players, it is sad.

The pedal steel guitar will make a fool out of 90% of guitar players. I've seen blaze Telecaster players try to take it up and give it up after six months in frustration.
