Going through the mountains of steel guitar historical data I seem to accumulate, a forumite who's "been around" sent me a document on old Fender letterhead entitled
"CURLEY CHALKER Fender 1000 Tuning." This was before he went to 10-string guitars and the E9th.
Most of us know that on the 1000, Curly played a C6 tuning going from F (low) to E (high).
Easy enough. But before he played the E9 tuning, what was his second neck tuned to, and what were the pedal changes?

I'm very interested in knowing the answer to this one, but I don't go back that far. (As far as my knowlege, I mean) I can remember Bobbe writing excitedly to me about Curley's playing when Bobbe was down that way......
maybe early 60s?? Always been a fan of Chalker's stuff! but can't say I knowingly ever heard him play another tuning???? (other than E9th) Don't keep us in suspense, Herb! What was it? |

Doug: Frank Crawley, a long long time friend of Bobbe's, lives here in Macon, Ga. He has told me lots of stories about Bobbe when they were in the USAF; how Bobbe would hitchike to some distant city to hear and watch Curly playing. I'd bet he knows what this tuning is...

That might have been another secret, like his Verticals were for a long time! I caught him in a weak-moment one evening and he told me what they did, which I had on my 1st. Franklin in '80.

Very interesting, Herb. That F13 (open, no pedals) is the same as Leon's and Noel's E13 neck, only raised a half-step. Any ideas why? Do you think he liked the higher sound, or just the fact that an F tuning complements a C tuning positionally? |

Curly played a lot of jazz with a lot of horn players. I would imagine that he played F13 because it's a horn key.
