For me it'll be to practice more and be more focused with a planned session behind the guitar.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all!

Well, I've always said I'll know when to shuck it and I believe that time has arrived.

My New Year's resolution is to cut my commercial playing to no more than 1 night a week and that will probably be a Saturday night. I'm resolved to spend more time here in the studio, doing some commercials but not at the expense of my quality time with my family. I'm also working on the biography of a well known steel guitar player, and I'm also resolved to finish the book no later than June of 2004.

And of course I intend to correspond with my many friends here on the best of the best, The Steel Guitar Forum. What a treasure we have, and thanks to give to one b0b Lee. (hell, he even has me trained how to type his first name). In any case he's appreciated more than he knows. Guess that's about it.

My wife, Pat,who has been so fully supportive of my musical efforts since I retired from flying as an Executive Jet Pilot, thinks it's time to really "retire" and I guess that's the end of it. Been one hell of a ride though.

One always wonders how far one could have gone in this field, if one hadn't decided on family security in earlier times. But it's all gone now, so what the hell, hook up the wagon and move on, right?

Be 71 years young in February and been at these horns since 1948 when I started as a raw-butted kid with the Hoyle Nix band here in west Texas, and, guess what, finished her up right here in the same place. Is that what they meant when they wrote, "Will the circle be unbroken"?

Good luck to all and a prosperous, happy life to you. In my native language, Adios, hasta la vista.

Fred and Pat Shannon

Ole,
So good to hear from you! You've got the best guitar in the world to do it on but I don't have to tell you that do I? Hope you've had a great Christmas and don't drink too much on New Years Eve!

My New Year wish is a variety of things. I want to purchase a new steel, improve on the C6th tuning, work on my speed picking and improve in every area of playing. I also intend to play out more this year.

My steel guitar new year resolution is to practice every day and play along with cds without stopping on a certain song and I'm gonna do my best to play some songs by myself with no other instruments. I'm not usually a solo player, since I play along with cds, but I'd love to play a few songs by myself. I also want to learn to play songs I've never heard before. At the end of each day I would like to exercise for an hour, then practice music for an hour. Somehow up until now I usually only have time to do one or the other. But I really need both. Maybe if I quit spending so much time reading and writing on the Forum...

My New Years resolution is to become a more serious contributor to this forum. It's time to begin to act my age, stop the nonsense, and really do my best to make valuable contributions that will make an impact and will benefit all forum members.

I resolve to get my home studio under control.
The gear is all there, but it's a mess. Whenever I want to do something I spend too much time clearing a space, and finding the needed cables, etc.

I also resolve to talk HowardR out of his resolution.

You got it Joey! There's nothing I wouldn't do for you, and I know that there's nothing you wouldn't do for me.....so, together, we do nothing for each other!

My real resolution is to seriously learn some music theory. What little I play has always been by ear, and I have two of them that are 90% tin. It was ok years ago when all I was interested in was Bluegrass.

Now that my musical tastes have changed, it is not enough to know "how", but also "why."

I don't have very much leisure time, but I have enrolled in a basic music course that is one night per week (1 hour) for 14 weeks. Hopefully, I'll be a better student at this stage of my life, than when I was really in school.

I LOVE that one, Wayne,
I guess the ONLY thing BETTER would be if Paul asked me to sit down next to HIS rig and TEACH him that "Killer" lick.

Right now, the resolution is to get as much of Steel Guitar Instruction by Scotty (20 solos for C6 lap steel) - with Remington Ride, Dance of the Goldenrod, Steel Guitar Rag, etc., etc.) under my belt about time for Dallas in March - started on it just this week. Along with continuing the study of Jeff Newman's "Supersong" course, some crucial picking exercises and playing as much music as I can. It is a true passion that offers endless opportunity for growth and discovery...amazing! Happy New Year!

Okay, I resolve to never let my strings go dead. I really have no excuse, since I own a string store. I confess that twice this year I let my strings go beyond the point where they sound true. It won't happen in 2004 - I promise!

HowardR, if that picture epitomizes your resolution, I think you've taken s step backward. Funny picture and the cloth sure leaves a lot open to the imagination!

I have to admit to a "C6th Callous" syndrome on my forearms also. I'm going to work to eliminate those. My problem is that I can work a week on an arrangement on C6th, and finally get what I think is something respectable. Then I do as I usually do, turn on my E9th neck, and in 15 minuites have something I like better. Go figure.

Dear Howard,

I hope you aren't serious! Your posts have made me laugh harder than just about anything on the Internet.

I hope that perhaps we could see each other play sometime, I will make a point of being more dilligent about promoting the shows I do. I have four this week alone, two down, two to go.

I played about 100+ shows last year, this year want to bump it up to 150, and do more recording. The things I need to work on on the steel are the usual suspects. If I can get that harmonic/picked note thing from the Franklin video happening by Halloween, I'll be a happy man.
