One of my New Year's Resolutions is to begin archiving the mountains of stuff I have on reel-to-reel tape and cassette to CD format. Right now I'm listening to cassette of stuff an exceptionally good steel player... sounds like from the 1960's... named Lee Knight. This is not a commercial tape but a home compilation of studio and home recorded stuff. Material is like Ebb Tide, Midnight in Amarillo, Sept. In the Rain, Canadian Sunset, standards like that. Great player and great touch.
I know absolutely nothing about him. Forum?

Hello Herb
I don`t know much about himas I live in Norway-but I do have a couple of records by him.One is Alabama bound/My Tawnee-a 45 on Rivers Records.
Also have an Texas Jim Lewis LP released in Germany where he is the steeler.He plays an instrumental called"Lee Knight`s Hop".
He has at least one more 45 that I don`t own called "Let me talk to you/Still missing you" on Bright Records.I also have a 16" Radio transcription with T.J Lewis from the 40/50`s where he`s on.
Not much,but some.

all i can add to what egil said is that i am all but positive that lee's son has posted on this forum occasionally, though i can't recall seeing anything recently.
lee knight was from the pacific northwest and i think had serious vision problems?? i would guess ray montee would know of him.
"lee knight's hop" is a great tune as i recall.

YES! Lee Knight was a mighty fine steelman. He was even luckier, as his wife was a top knotch vocalist and rythm guitar player. He played a triple Bigsby,with pedals, the last I knew. He at one time played TV here in Portland with a band that I too, ultimately worked with. He moved on to Seattle and he and the wife had a TV Show there, where they took requests, etc.
His son did contact me ages ago.....and hopefully, he might see your post Herb. He's a nice kid as well. If I can somehow come up with an address or whatever, I'll past it along to you. |

Herb - Look in Tom Bradshaw's catalog of a few years ago. I believe Lee Knight is one of the players he did a short biography on.

Hi Herb,
That be my dad and the album your listening to is called Shades of Knight and it was cut in 1961. Thank you all for the nice comments about dad. He passed away in 1979 and I had only been playing steel for about 2 years so I missed out on a lot of what he could have taught me. He played from his heart and I never tire of listening to the old man.

Those are two of my favorite cuts. The chime break in My Tawne is Byrd standard. Thanks for sharing.
