well he used to! his former steel guitarist that had been with him since almost day one was johnny helms from salina Ks. Johnny was nominated for ACM steel guitarist of the year in 2002. He's a great player and a sweetheart of a guy. I have a friend who is toby's guitar tech.he told me the new cats name but i have forgotten. Johhny used to put on quite a show but dont know about the new kid.

Tobby made 25 million this year so I`m sure he has a good steel player and pays him at least a $200 per show...uh,oh,puf puf...  |

The problem, Damir, is that the steel player is replaceable - Mr Keith (unfortunately, in my opinion) is not...
He's surely the most crass and tasteless country artiste in current circulation. I guess, though, that I'd still take his $200 if he offered it to me - work is work.

Toby's steelplayer looks alot like Randle Currie in the "I Love This Bar" video.
Toby has used steel from day one on records. Yes, he's an outlaw in country.
I'm happy he's so successful!

I'm not sure just who Tobey's new steel player is, but I can tell you that he's not making much money playing behind Tobey. Chris Troop is making more money driving his bus than he did playing keys for him. To say I like Tobey would be a lie. Roger I must disagree with you. Tobey Keith IS replaceable. As is everyone else in the business. He has some good material out yes, but still he is replacable. Damir I don't know where you got your information, but Tobey doesn't pay his musicians $200.00 a show. He pays them $500.00 a week. For someone to have made 25 million you would think that he could pay more. Johnny Helms was Tobey's steel player from day one before he ever got his record deal. He finally decided to come off the road and left Tobey in August. He is a great player and a super person indeed. I wish him well. I can't say the same for Tobey though I'm sorry.

Robert,
I think you missed my point - if someone pays to see Toby Keith - I suppose some people do  - then that's who they expect to see. Is he 'replaceable' in the musical pantheon? Most definitely, and the sooner the better, but, right now, he seems to be the flavour of the month.
It's just my opinion, I know, but I can't abide his overbearing 'machismo'; I know there's an element of humour in his videos, but I'm not convinced that the character he portrays is very far from the real Toby Keith. (I feel the same about Montgomery Gentry, by the way - I guess there is an audience for this 'redneck' culture, but it's not for me.)
Is it $500 EVERY week (plus per deum, surely) - working or not? Might not be too bad if there's a chance to supplement one's income when he's not touring; I am a little surprised, though - I'd have expected the money to be a little better than that, and even $200 a night sounds low for such a major artiste. Emmylou Harris paid $300 per gig twenty years ago! (I have a friend who actually turned that down!)

Josh Bertrand is the steel guitar player for Toby. Josh is a great person and a very gifted individual with a bright future.
I have no opinion concerning the compensation of Toby's band members, but I have known Joey Floyd (who playes guitar for Toby)for 25 years, and Joey and Josh visited me here at my home last Thanksgiving. All I can say is, whatever they're making they are obviously satisfied because they were both very happy and spoke highly of Toby. |
