Friends -

I've just gotten acquainted with this tune over the last couple of months.

Would anyone who knows the history of this tune care to enlighten me? Who first recorded it? What tuning was used? Etc...

Thanks,

Gary

Billy Bowman wrote and recorded this song. He worked for many years with Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. Billy passed away some years ago. I did have the opportunity to see and chat with him in St. Louis at one of Scotty's Conventions. He was a very humble man, and a terrific person. I do not know the tuning he used, but most western swing players of the 50s were using a 6th tuning; usually an A6th or C6th. B.Bowman Hop is a great tune and has been recorded by many.

Billy's favorite tuning was that of Joaquin Murphy. I knew him well in his days with Eddie Hill in Memphis. HJ

Billy Bowman lived near me in Johnson City, TN for several years. He was the steelplayer on a local TV show. They referred to him as smiling Billy Bowman. I was at a music store and I recognized him from TV. I did not play steel then, but had an inquiring mind. He took me out to his car, opened the trunk and inside was an Emmons pedal steel. The very first steel I had ever seen. I was fascinated by the mechanics of the thing. It really got me interested in getting one. I was in college at the time, so I had to wait a few years, but I will never forget that moment of laying eyes on that old Emmons PP. I still play an Emmons PP till this day. I never had any idea about his stature in the steel guitar world or him writing the B-Bowman hop at the time. I know this is off subject about the B-Bowman hop, but I just wanted to throw in my recollection of Billy Bowman.
