Steel Guitar Cruise??
Recently the brains in this outfit, you guessed it my girlfriend, suggested that a steel guitar jam on a cruise ship would be the best of both worlds for players and their wives and/or significant others. We play, they play, and someone else does the cooking and cleaning! I know that some cruise lines offer package trips to groups, but don't know much else about it. Perhaps someone out there does know (got a travel agent in the woodpile?) and could fill us in. How far in advanced would we need to plan for something like this? But more importantly, how many of you would be interested in going?

David....
If I could squeeze it in, so to speak, I think it is a great idea. Meriul always says it is a great experience, and I have never been on a cruise. We must have worn poor Vanetta out last week!
I will be emailing those pictures I promised, as soon as I download to my 'puter.
See Ya....

I played on an "inside passage" Alaskan cruse back in the mid 80's. You might want to set up the "Jam's" for when the ship is in port because if the floor is pitching and rolling...so is you steel! If your moving up the neck and the changer end of you guitar is raising up, you get there sooner than you think and vise versa. Still not as bad as the singers had it with the mike's moving away from them only to come back and wack'em in the mouth on the other side of the swell! (head-set mikes were not around yet)

We did two cruises in the late 90's and played while at sea. It was different to say the least. I think steelers and keyboard players have an advantage because we sit. I did see some very strange line dances though.
On one trip Janie Fricke was singing as the ship rocked so she finished the song holding the mike stand. After that song she broke out laughing because her next song was "Please Help me I'm Falling".
I would go on cruise for a steel jam if scheduling permits.

Sounds like fun! I used to play on some cruise ships and I can tell you it would be nice to actually get to mingle with the other passengers! (it aint really like the "Love Boat" on them things) If you don't want your gals to put on a mandatory 10 Lbs though, you might wanna re-consider the bike run.

This is a great idea. I have been on two cruises this year, and I am addicted. However, I search the inter-net and find cheapies for less than $500.00. Just did that on a 7 day cruise to the Eastern Carribean. I have found that most of the "special interest" cruises are much more money. If the price is right, count me in! If somebody wants to put it together, you should get a free cruise out of it because typically if you can book 15 rooms or so, you go for free.

The Kevin Fowler Band played a cruise two weeks after 9/11. I'm sure security ain't as crazy these days as it was at that time. (Talk about waitin' in long lines for ever....) But one thing hasn't changed. Luggin' all your steel gear and clothes, etc. on the boat. They ain't no porters gonna tote all that stuff. You gotta haul it yo'seff!!
Actually, the cruise is o.k. if you accept the fact that the cruise is the main deal. Not the ports of call. I liked it o.k. but after a few days I was itchin' to go somewheres besides the "top deck"
Keep on pickin'!

( sound of seagulls, wind spraying etc...) Break to Rear upper deck near the shuffleboard area...
DW: "So, Eric, what do you really think of Sierras?"
Reece: " Yeah, and that Red Baron you had, how do you think it REALLY stacked up the the MavericK?
Eric: "Hey guys, it's getting a little cold out here and I've got to get back in, besides it's kinda slippery out here....."
b0b: "Whatsamatter Eric, forget your "deck shoes?.."
Eric: "No guys, I just gotta get in there with Ray and Bobbe, I left my amp on..... HEY!! What the H......."
( scrambling sounds....... long silence... splash..}
Reese: "Now, you go in and get Ray, Dave and I'll get Bobbe. I'll tell him I want to be friends with him again.."
b0b: "Yeah and I'll get Petey and Wayne to give us a hand..."
( ...sound of 17 steel guitars playing Crazy Arms gets louder.....)
Yeah, I think it'd be a great idea. Maybe Mr Bell could look into a Lake Superior trip in Mid November...
