Recently sitting around after a gig my friends and I were discussing what inspired us to spend all those years practicing and playing to master our instruments. Though many of us had in part more lofty motivations, the universal answer was we thought it would get us girls. Now that I am at an age where getting lucky means the kids are all out and the wifes at her sisters, I often ask why do we do it. Why keep trying when the gigs stop being fun, the nights too long, the latest McCountry song I have to learn is as bad as the last. Despite all this I still swoon every time I hear great steel singing through on the radio. I suffer through all the pop pablum purveyed by pretentious, Nashville pretty-boys (holy natering nabobs of negativism) hoping for a few honest bars of steel. When I do hear it I fall in love all over again. Is it hopeless? What motivates you guys?

Keith,
I couldn't agree with you more. I quit playing for about 9 years and I have to tell you sincerely, they were the most unhappiest years of my life. After being a bandleader for a number of years, and playing every 'tonk' in 4 or 5 states, one has to believe that the frustration of being a band leader or condoning the activities of a room full of drunks for 4 hours, to continue playing has to be a love of the instrument and the "good sounds" from a "good band".

I told my band sometime ago, "I don't hit any bad notes. There's just 2 "can'ts" here, you "can't" stay up with me, you "can't" stay. Clears the air right up front.

And Ray, I've been there and done that too.

Chris, well stated.. I immediately go into the arms folded position on this new crap called "country". Not on the bandstand where Texas Pride is playing, I can MAKE THAT GUARANTEE.

Fred

Everything we man do boils down to "girls".If we buy a great car,we bought it thinking about what girls will say, when we buy a fast motorcycle we buy it because girls love them, when we play in the bar we play for women attention,if we work a hard job we do it to make money for who?girls of course.Sure many things we do because WE like it, but the bigest reason is ,girls. And I think it is a natural thing afer all,we love girls and we want them to love us,talk to us,smile at us and ...well,you know already, you`re all musicians here.Music is like a drug, once you`re hooked up you`re done.Once you get to the stage and enjoy what you do AND get paid for doing it,you`re hooked.Music is the biggest part of my life, never let me down or hurt me,brought only fun and joy, there is no better feeling for me on this world than make some great music with the good friends,on the stage or in the back yard next to the BBQ grill and some cold beer...and of course...some girls...

"...the latest McCountry song..."

Now that's a Classic line.
I can't wait to use it!

I've gotten discouraged a time or two, (especially in the late '80's).

I just throw on some old New Riders Of The Purple Sage and play along with Buddy Cage and the boys for a while, and I'm ready to go out and gig again!

To be perfectly honest though, we're recently up one family member and down one income, so I'm now counting every gig in terms of viable funds, instead of "gravy" (make mine Wavy Gravy!).

And of course it doesn't hurt when some babe comes up to you at a gig and...
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
If this were an actuall emergency....

i'm still a young guy compared to the average steel player's age, and i play the steel because to me it is one of the sweetest sounding instruments and i can't get enough of it's sound, i love it and can't pull myself away from it. my friends think i am crazy, maybe i am, but i love music to the point of compulsion and have loved the sound of the steel since i first heard it. on the notion of chicks, yeah they love musicians, i liken it to being kind of a snake charmer. i'll take whatever helps. the bottom line for me is the sound. did i mention that i happily lug around a couple hundred pounds of equipment for this sound?

Whatever girls I attracted with my steel guitar, I scared away with my wierd personality. Except for one.

I play because it's who I am. If I stopped, I'd have to die. I couldn't live long without it. I don't even know why, and I've thought about it a lot.

It's possible that "chicks dig" steel players a bit more because the value of their equipment looks to be a little more than the other instruments.

I've found that except for the occaisonal "grudge thing" that very few women think seriously about "dating" musicians, mainly because they know, or soon find out how cheap they/we are working. I don't know how many musicians it dawns on, but most musicians are looked at as bums. I doubt that you'd find bums lined up at the "day labor" lines we all pass that would work for 5 or 6 bucks an hour. Even the Illegals..

The only "luck" I ever had/have was/is when I immediately mention that what money I make at 50-150$ a night is actually just "cigarette money". I won't have to explain making $47.50 a night because if my friends haven't shot me as per my instructions, I'll have done it myself.

When there's a jar on the bandstand saying:
Quote:
"We Aren't getting paid, so please help us out and don't put your money in the Jerry's Kids jar by the cash register. Give it to us. We get free drinks, but we're HUNGRY."
I think it gives them a "pretty good clue". They'll go for the guy that drives a dump truck, or works in a chip factory, fast food place, or lube rack and gets PAID.

As far as harleys being "babe magnets". I've found that indeed they are, but somehow the magnetism works on a gross weight scale.

Damir. I like the "buddy seat" arrangement on that bike. I doubt that many of my "girls" woud fit on it however... I always bring my shock adjuster and set them up a bit before I head out on a "babe mission".

I think from looking at Bobbe, that it's really "Airplanes".

If they were, Cal, I'd think they were "Air Ironing".

I play because I love it, it's in my blood, and I have to. I also have to improve. It doesn't matter how good I get, I have do better. Weird but true.

Keith Murrow's post said it all for me, until I read Jim Cohen's post. Now I'm wondering what's my reason for this behavior...

I agree with Damir, 100%. It's the reason why we have an audience. Boy must meet girl.

However, as you age, things other than sex seem equally as important. Right now, I play in the bands I do because I enjoy the chemistry these particular musicians makewith me.

C# and Joey... ROTFLMAO!

Yes, it's the sounds. There are so darn many of them, in so many places & combinations. They grab you by the ears and don't let go. You replay the lick in your head over and over again wondering how it was done and if you can do it too, with (the ever elusive) just enough practise and experience?

In order to get some structure to my madness I'm currently on Week 1 of Book 1 of Jeff Newman's 10 book, year long training course and already he's got my right hand hurtin'. But again it's no pain, no gain...
From his photo he looks like he could be a demanding schoolmaster :>)

Much as I love the steel, we all have to face the fact the we have picked an instrument which is not exactly the most appealing to the distaff side...probably the only horn with less sex appeal is the BANJO (just my luck that I play 'em both).

I started steel at age 43 after 11 years of marriage. I wasn't, and still am not, using it as a girl getter. For obvious reasons. I do appreciate the fact that my wife likes my playing and our 6 year old daugher thinks I'm the greatest player in the world.

Back in high school and college, I played keyboards in assorted bands. Nothing was less interesting to the girls. In the bands I was in, the drummers got the most attention from the ladies, then the singers, then the lead guitarists, then the bassists. The keyboardist was apparently thought of as being on, or from, another planet. I'd imagine PSG would have been similar, since it is a sit-down instrument which immobilizes and absorbs the player similarly to keys, making the player seem too distracted and inanimate to be all that interesting to the ladies. At least that's my theory.
