Johnny Cox - A delight to the ears

Last night I was listening to you Pickin on your Tribute to George Strait Vol 2. I will never be the same again after listing to you rendition of "Does Fort Worth Ever cross Your Mind" The pure sweetness, depth and width of your tone leaves me lost for words to describe it. You are one awesome bundle of talent. Your playing is a stimulation of the soul!! I do play a few gigs here and there, but your playing is pure pleasure to the ear and inspires me. I listened to that cut over 20 times on the cd player last night and am ready to do likewise tonight. Joan, what a man!!! Thank you again!!!!

I totally agree!! Johnny just left my home 20 minues ago. After dinner, our "little brother" Pat Coyne, Johnny and I went up to my music room where we had a blast picking and talking steel guitars. We had my '79 Zum lacquer; '79Emmons p/p and Johnny's new 'green' MSA cranking and it was great.

Johnny Cox is one of the most underrated steel players who is not only a killer on the E9th, but what he does on the C6th is just incredible. We are always amazed with the ease he can play anything! Tonight was a real treat to listen to Johnny play. By the way, his new MSA is really a great sounding steel guitar!

QUESTION: Pat and I have been trying to convince Johnny (and Joan)for two years to do an teaching/instructional video series featuring the best of Earnest Tubb, Connie Smith etc since he's been with these country ledgends (and so many more!!). What do you think??? Any suggestions??

PS Joan...we missed you again...by the way, the icecream at dinner was sugar free...email me and I will tell you how many scoups Johnny had! HA

Well, Johnny is not underrated with me. He is a great, great player and a good guy also.
Bill, I would have loved to been in on that with or without ice cream. I just betcha there is one thing I can hold my own with Johnny though and that is eating homemade ice cream. Newberry would tell you there ain't nobody who can beat me at that.

Not in a million years would I have dreamed that I would ever get to work side by side with my *little brother* but this past month has been unreal!
Johnny is by far one of the greatest players
I have ever heard...and I have heard a few!
He's a *perty good ole boy* on top of that!
Not only am I proud to be at MSA, but I am proud to have Johnny here to learn from!! Both in building steels and Playing!!

There are a whole series of cd's called
"Pickin on........." you name it. They are all instrumental and always feature Robby Turner or Johnny Cox or Jesse Harris and lately Terry Crisp. They are all great players but you know by now who my favorite is. Pickin on George Strait vol 1. and vol 2. Johnny Cox may know were these are available. B0B these would sell well on the forum. on a pilgrimage to the Station Inn last year I sat enthralled by Johnny's skill and his massive multineck Zumsteel...

I will say this about that night... on "My shoes keep walking back to you" it was the first time I ever heard a steel picker turn DOWN for a solo !

I think that had as profound an effect on me as anything I've ever seen.

I'll have to underline Russ Hicks' post... just WHO is under-rating Dumplin'? He's known far and wide by all steel-related folk for being a monster on his... or anyone else's... horn.

He came out to a Bush gig the other night and sat in on my horn for the last set. I got to relax for 45 minutes and got a steel lesson as well.

I think he really dug the sound of my 64 Emmons, but didn't lose his cool, Reece...

he's loyal Team Millenium!

Johnny's picking on those "Pickin On George Strait" recordings is great! I really enjoyed hearing him backing Connie on her Opry segments. Russ, sure do enjoy your great breaks on her songs also!
