I just recieved a phone call tonight from G.T. Gore, the son of Johnny Gore, the saxaphone player in Mel Tillis's band.
Johnny Gore passed away last Monday morning from heart failure.
Many of the steelers will remember Johnny as he did many of the steel guitar Jamfests that we had back in the mid seventies.
Johnny was the only horn player on the album we recorded in Nashville in 76 featuring many steel players....The album was called, 'It's The First Time.'
Johnny was also the only horn player on the Calvacade Of Guitars concert in Dallas in the mid-seventies that featured some of the top steel guitarists and jazz guitarists.
For the last twenty years Johnny has been with the Statesiders.
I know that he will be missed by the many steelers that were ever around him.
Rest in peace, Johnny.

Dave....As you know I had the privilege of playing many engagements with Johnny. He was a great player, but more importantly, a wonderful man and dear friend. Had it not been for you I might have never had the opportunity and pleasure of playing with him, for which I again thank you.
My most sincere prayers and sympathy to the family, he'll also be missed by thousands of friends and fans. |

Dave,
This is heartbreaking news. Johnny was with Mel during my four year stint. We shared the love of BeBop and would go to the after hour jams in Vegas. I witnessed his musicianship, he was a monster player.
If you have any of the details, could you post them?

This is a loss and reflection on Mel's willingness to keep a sax (or any brass/woodwand instrament) in a country band.

Johnny was a dear friend to me as well. I had a visit with him at the Opry a few weeks back. This comes as a great shock. Johnny will be missed by many musicians of all types of music. He was truly a players player.

2 weeks ago we opened for Mel Tillis at Schraeder Hall, Tx> Mel featured his band a lot. Johnny and the harmonica player did a Danny Boy rendition on sax and harmonica that was great. They played on their age and Johnny supposedly had to go to the bathroom. He left the stage and you could hear a toliet flush. He mossyed back on stage with toliet paper hanging out his drawers. The crowd loved it. He was a really great guy. I wish his family the best.
