I know some steel players have nicknames. For instance, some pickers call me stitch... I might explain why sometime... Or... I call Tommy White "Tee Dubb" cause we got it like that.... Or Paul Franklin...
"F-diddie"... What about b0b... Anyone else have any interesting nicknames....

Thanks in advance,
Wayne Baker

Band members have called me Dirt for years. It's on my band jackets. It was shortened from Dirty Ernie, (which I've had since Feb. 1977.)

Of course Buddy is The Big E and/or The Maestro.

I get called "Big-un" regularly as I am an "abundant American".

I was given the nickname "Laredo" many years ago, derived from Larry. I use it as my e-mail name.

I think of BE as the 'Budmeister'; and I bet I'm more 'abundant' than you, Ricky! We had a band back in England called 'Fatso' - it was, apparently, my fault......

4 years ago, I did a gig in Mayfield Kentucky at a bingo hall on a Tuesday night in a dry county. Before the gig we ate at Catfish Corner, had hush puppies, beans, slaw, the works. The guy who hired me nicknamed me: Dougly Do-Right It has stuck since. DJ

When I was a little kid, my family used to call me "Jimbo". As I got older, I became, in turn, "Jimmy", then "Jim". And whaddaya know! After, lo, these many years, I'm back to "Jimbeaux"! Only this time with the cajun spelling, just to make sure it both looks and sounds utterly ridiculous when combined with "Cohen".

I once tried back in 1969 to adopt the persona of "Travis"(a mysterious and notorious guitarslinger w/an image somewhere between Clint Eastwood and Jerry Garcia)but no one was buying it. Lately though on The Riders Of The Purple Sage gigs,Cody has been introducing me like this: "...And on the pedal steel guitar, ladies and gentlemen, from that little oil town north of Bakersfield - Rhinestone,California - and from the illustrious Rhinestone family......C'mon folks give it up for Mike Rhinestone....."
jeez........ -MJ-

The late Ron "The Fiddler" Boychuk used to call me Uncle Andy. (I was a month and a half older than he was.) We were like brothers and I miss him.

Several years ago, my old bluegrass band nicknamed me "Big Smokey" because I'm big, and because of my penchant for a fine cigars. This name has stuck. I play out under that name in one band, some folks simply call me "Big" and my wife now has the nickname "Lady Smokey"

I took lessons from David Wright for a short while. He kinda took me under his wing and hooked me up with a new Sierra. Thus I call him "Steel Daddy". Mainly I started callin him that cause he always called me "Kid".

One time the singer hollered "C Sharp" when he wanted me to play, and half the band changed keys.

I played and traveled with a gospel group for a couple of years. I was not married and over 30. They gave me the name "The Queenless King" when they would introduce me. At 33 I finally married and got rid of that name but there was one other name they tagged me, "Dialtone". I finally found out after I quit why they named me that. They said when it came to playing and kickoffs I was as steady as a "Dialtone". Where people come up with these names sometimes blows my mind.

Dusty Montana.
Dusty because I once looked a bit like Mr. Hoffman.
and Montana
because we did a session with 5 Davids 3 Johns and 2 Tom's, we all had to get knicknames just to cut the confusion. My dad used to buy wool out in Montana.

Doug Jones and I have been swapping them for a while here. His most recent "tag" is "Diego del Fuego", ( Doug of Fire) and since he decided that there is no "Good Eric", and that I've been flying down and hunting gators with Murnell Babineaux in my spare time lately, mine is Ericeaux Maleaux Flambeaux Thibideaux.

After following Gary Morse on stage the other night, I think "Tired Old Eric" is a little more fitting..

Gotta love them old Sheaux~Buds..

Others' results may vary.

Ray, we call Skip for some reason to do with his High School Specialty, Larry, we call "Mr. Music Stand/ Dr Gizmo". Pete, we call "Dep. Sierra", Wes Bakken, we call "Floyd", for his masterful piano synth that has saved us all from unknown hordes of keyboard players.

Mind you, this is all at "tear down time", and in person, I try for a little more "formality". Especially if they look like they're in a bad mood.

Last night I met Gordon Black, a player from Burns OR that travelled to the gig at Jubitz. It was great to introduce him to the other band members, " Meet Mr. Black" (the movie) but a little disconcerting to have him introduce himself to me...

Hmm... things are a little different here today. Is that the faint hint of brimstone in the air..

EJL
