Bobby Black Sighting
My friend Dennis Sherman in San Francisco sent me the following email:
quote:
Gotta love Da City sometimes...I was walking back to my Downtown office the other day and came across a jazz trio playing a noon concert outside 101 California St...standup bass, keyboards and Bobby Black on a double-neck Carter pedal steel...doing jazz standards, "sleepwalk" & "crazy"!!
It sounded pretty cool and afterwards I exchanged pleasantries with Mr. Black and said "howdy" from the appropriate players!!!

I truly believe Bobby should be in the hall of fame. I've known him for over 25 years and he never ceases to amaze me. His country rock styling on the PSG was a major influence on me as well as countless others. One of the nicest guys in the world. I remember times playing next to him at jams or on the same bill with him, and he always had nothing but good things to say about my playing, no matter how bad it was. A true classic gentleman. Did I mention that he he plays awesome?

I heartily agree. I've known Bobby for over 40 years. He has been a great help and an essential and willing resource, especially when I was starting out. He plays with the utmost taste -- he really listens and plays delightful stuff. He never detracts from the overall sound; he just enhances it. Even when you're playing two steel guitars together (which is enormous fun!), it never sounds like too much.

Mr.Black my one remaining good ear thanks you!.

About the only thing that I miss about being in the bay area is spending time with Bobby Black talking music. I had the pleasure of getting Bobby and Sneaky together (they had never met).
I set up and managed an R&D lab in the San Jose area for a large Japanese company. We had an open house once a year. I had Bobby put together a group to provide the music each year. We also had some jam activities there, ..Bobby, Joe Wright, Bill Stafford, and a bunch of others. Nothing organized, just hey lets get together for some fun.
Spent the eve before Christmas eve with Bobby and Larry one year. They brought out the photo collection. I was amazed to see the lineup of big names that Bobby had played with. Bobby is top of the heap as a picker and a person!
Check his web site for some of the photos.

Congratulations to Bobby Black for his noon jazz concert at 101 California, I wish I could have been there to listen to it...... I also wish that I could forget my association to another event that happened on the 34th floor of that same building! 101 California
