I am home from work today with a cold and thought that I would record a little pedal steel... This is my first recording... There are many mistakes but I like the energy of it. I feel like I might be trying to cram in too many notes and should worry more about sustain and intonation of the bar...
Constructive criticism is very welcome!

Wow! That ain't half-bad! As a matter of fact, for 3 months, it's pretty good! Of course...you could be lying, or you uncle could be Tom Brumley, or you could have been injected with talent from an alien steeler, or a host of other things!
At any rate...
Keep it up---you're doing fine!!!
(Nope, not too many notes either.) |

Thanks!
Three Months on PSG.
But 25 years on Guitar, 10 years on Dobro.
So the foundation was already built.
Thanks for the Brumley reference as the West Coast/Bakersfield sound is my biggest influence on Tele and PSG.

Hey Grant, good stuff! I love that West Coast sound.
I noticed a bit of tuning (or is it bar position)disonance. Listen to the end of the phrase just before the half-way point (0:1 . Those "beats" have to go. Probably bar position.
Still, it's a great start. You're doing the right thing to be listening to recordings of yourself. |

Thanks for the critique Joey.
Yeah, it seems that things kind of fell apart from 16-25 seconds into the recording on repeated listenings.
Coming from a dobro background, I find that I struggle to keep my bar hand solid and steady. I'm wiggling it around when I should be zero-ing in on the tone![This message was edited by Grant Johnson on 17 September 2003 at 04:58 PM.] |

Hey Grant,
Seems like there are all sorts of steel players in the Seattle area...I've had my Carter Starter for about 6 weeks and did a little "demo" myself...check out this link... http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum5/HTML/006157.html
I'm trying to meet some players so I can steal...I mean "learn" some licks from them...If you are interested drop me an email...

Good Steeling Roger! Perhaps we could organize a Northwest Steelers Jam someday.

There is NO greater aid, when it comes to learning the steel guitar, than making and analyzing a recording of yourself playing.
Remember what we hear is NOT what the listener hears. Once you hear what you are doing, as others hear it, you will then be able to analyze it and make the necessary correction comensurate with one's God given talents and aptitudes.
May Jesus bless you and lead you in the right paths to obtain the most joyful life playing the world's most beautiful instrument,
