lap steel / seller clueless

I saw this morning on Ebay a epiphone lap steel. same year and modal as mine.

gcrep...says it's a 60's vintage and is selling fr over 800$.

I know it is a 1939 model and worth no more than 350$.

gcrep..is that guitar center clearance?

really ill informed. shame on them.

Oh yes, that's Guitar Center alright.
For some entertaining (and enlightening) reading, check this thread over at the IGS forum, where a GC manager gets a 'total workover' (partly thanks to our own HowardR.... ) because of their vintage guitar policy on eBay.

I just HAD to jump in and lambast GC / IE too. That Chris / GC mgr sure strikes me as a guy who is in for a sore awakening when/if he's around long enough to learn a bit more about GC's governance. He reminds me of a motivated 1st Lieutenant! I wonder how old he is and how long he's been in the Music business? Let's send some good waves his way; Maybe it'll help him along.

In Chicago there is this "used" guitar store that is SUPER over priced. I was walking down Clark St. one day and saw in the window an old Fender 6 string Champion lapsteel. I went in the store and asked how much it was...the owner told me $2,000.00!!!! I told him I would give him $350 on my very best offer...he told me that the pickup alone was worth $1,000 to Fender collectors. That was the last time I have EVER set foot in that guys store.

Most people from Chicago will know what store I am talking about.

Wow! You guys are tough! But I have to say I agree with most of you. The GC here in Austin has some nice guys working in it but they've had a 1948 National double neck sitting in there for several years at $1350 or something like that. It's nice but not that nice. And the "vintaage" instruments hanging on the wall are totally outrageous.

There are also a couple of locally owned shops here that have incredibly overpriced guitars and amps. One I stopped in a while back had an old Fender Dual 8 with an "original" case that was so crapped out that it couldn't have been usable. The thing was missing one of the pop-sicle tuner trays and they were asking well over $1000 for it.

But I have to add that I did buy a nice 1963 Gretsch model 6119 at the GC in Dallas around 1993. I made them an offer based on the price of a similar one that I'd seen at Charlie's Guitars that same day but a little lower and they took it. It had the original case and even had a "vintage" set of Gibson strings in the case. Unusable strings for sure but still pretty cool to look at.

Anyway I think it all depends on what you offer on a particular piece. I can't remember what they were asking for that guitar I bought. I think it was around $1500. But I paid them $800 which I believe was "all it's money" at that time. It has appreciated some though and I do like it for that Beatles "Georgie" sound. And it works great for a soft low jazzy guitar.

Yeah......eye candy is all they have. Every single guitar they have is over $1000. I have no idea on how they stay in business...must be a town full of morons to pay $1,000 for a 80's model Stratocaster.
