I just came across a concert poster from the early '60s, looks like, and he was travelling with Shot Jackson AND Don Helms (along with Roy Acuff, the Wilburn Brothers, Jimmy Riddle, June Webb, Bashful Brother Oswald and Ottawa Valley stars Orval Prophet and the Happy Wanderers -- admission $1.75 at the door.)
Doesn't prove anything, other than that he knew these guys. There sure isn't much steel in the Cash collection, although there's a bit on the latest album (on the same cut with clarinet!)
When I heard about Johnny's passing, I went out and got this album, and June's new one, and played along with my own steel. Sounded OK.
I was at the concert in London, Ontario in 1968 when he proposed to June on stage, and met him before the show in the role of college newspaper photographer. I hope they do meet on the far side of Jordan, just like in the song on June's '99 album.
