..I'd like to get some feedback from any of you weekend warriors who play in a "new country" cover band...
..my experience with covers is mostly classic rock or folk/country rock based stuff from the 60's and 70's...last week I jammed with some experienced people who are rehearsing a "new country" act...the female singer has a good voice, the lead guitar player is very good...
..I wasn't really familiar with a lot of their material, because I don't listen to "new country" on the radio much..I listened to the first set songs on CD for a few days before I went, and I played where I thought I could fit in, but I have to admit that I felt like a fish out of water because the progressions are a lot different than what I'm used to, and the "holes" are smaller and come at odd times, it seems to me..they asked me to come back, so I guess they want to try it out with a steel...
...I'm not really thrilled with the idea of playing "new country" covers, but I don't want to turn down what could possibly be a good gig if I had a different perspective on the approach to this type of music..
...so, do any of you weekend warriors who play this kind of music have any insights to offer on playing this kind of music?.. |

| i've played quite a bit with a girl who did modern country covers also....it's much harder than what i'm used to..jamming around familiar patterns and sounds and phrases.the arrangements are stricter, requiring more familiarity with the song. concentrate on learning the progressions fairly well, and where to put your stuff. then it becomes more fun. anyone that thinks new country is for non-pickers is crazy. there is some real tight hot stuff in there. |

Pat, I've been playing with new country cover bands for the last couple of years. My suggestion is to get the "Signature licks down as accurate as you can.. Since you have a female lead singer you probably will be doing "Broken Wing" by Martina McBride.. The steel intro to that song is essential..
I find that a mix of signature licks and a little of my own stuff thrown in to the mix works for me.
By the way I also play around the New Jersey area in a band called "After the Reign".. drop by one of our gigs sometime and say hello.
