| BR 549 will play in my neighborhood this weekend. Does anyone know if they will have a steeler, and who? |

| A fairly recent Opry appearance and a less recent tour had Don Herron doubling on fiddle & non-pedal steel. |

Forum member Chris Scruggs is also in the band and plays steel. I don't know if he's playing any steel with BR549, maybe he'll read this thread and let ya know.

Don Herron is my hero! Watch him switch between fiddle and steel during the same song, both going through the same amp. A show in itself.

I caught the fellers here in Lexington a month or so ago - you bet, Don Herron gives himself a full workout tending to both the fiddle and stand-up steel.
and Chris Scruggs is indeed a great addition to the rebirth of BR549, a highlight of the night for me was him hunkering down over the mic and nailing a couple of old Carl Smith favorites... and Donnie sure does a reverent cover of Johnny Sibert with those to round em out perfectly. |

| Which Carl Smith tunes? I've become a big fan. I played some Carl Smith recently for a singing, rockabilly friend who had never heard him and he nearly fell over, couldn't believe what a great voice the dude has. |

| I talked to Chris' mom (Gail Davies) while at a songwriter workshop. She is sure proud that Chris is now with BR549. She also told me that Chris used to be a hard rocker and didn't care much for country music until he met Dale Watson. I guess he had to meet someone from outside the family circle before he got hooked on country music. |

Okay, now see, y'all didn't give me the whole story. Not only did Don Herron play some great steel on his Fender triple neck, and really hot fiddle, he also grabbed an electric mandolin and ripped on that. Sometimes he'd have both hands on the steel with his fiddle still tucked under his chin.
And that Chris Scruggs. He mentioned Carl Smith getting into the Hall of Fame and then sang such a bittersweet version of "If Teardrops were Pennies and Heartaches were Gold" that there weren't a dry eye in the house. It was one helluva night of unrepentent good ole country, rockabilly, retro cowpunk, whatever. And all these young citybilly swing dancers showed up with ducktails, rolled up shirtsleeves, cat-eye glasses, body piercings and tattoes. And they got an earful of traditional country sounds and loved it - and bought out all the CDs before I could get one.
Every member of BR-549 is a full-on performer and entainer, and they put on a great show without letup from beginning to end. All the old gomers who complain about country being dead should get out and hear some of these young retrobilly groups and check out their CDs. Of course you have to take a long nap in the evening before you go out, because the music didn't even start until 10:30...that's PM. And some of those young things with those bare bellies and tight capri pants can give an old coot a hearattack just from looking - you'll need your rest.
Afterwards I met Don Herron. He's a great young guy. We talked about tunings, and vintage gitars, and how I met William Faulkner back in Oxford, Mississippi, and I forgot to ask him what BR-549 means 'cause one of those young things with cat-eye glasses and tattoes jiggled past. BR-549 was the phone number for Junior Samples used car sells. It was a skit on HEE-HAW. Just dial BR-549!! |
