Billy Bob Thorton honors Gary Hogue

Now here is a great star!! A very famous Hollywood actor that appreciates Steel guitar, and steel players. Gary and Billy Bob were good friends and Gary played on all his recordings, Marty Stewart produced the sessions, it seems as though Billy Bob really wants to be a country singer more than the great actor that he is.
The latest movie that he has produced and stared in has a statement in the credits that the movie was "In memory of Gary Hogue". Very thoughtful. This Hollywood actor may be the steel players best friend ever. Looks like Gary Hogue touched another soul like he has mine and so many others that had the honor to meet him.

Thank you Billy Bob Thorton! (You made the right choice in Dwight Yokum, "Sling Blade",a great movie!) Casting John Ritter in his role, and Dwight in his was pure genius.

I couldn't agree more. Thorton is a great actor and Dwight as well. I loved Sling Blade and watch it over and over. Good to have Mr. Thorton on our side.

I just watched the movie last week, an I thought there was a lot of steel music in the sound track, so I also was suprised at end to see they had honored Gary Hogue an Jim Virney with the movie. It is a pretty good movie, about a family that is all screwed up, down south. Jerry

Billy Bob Thornton sings a cover of "Ring of Fire" on the Earl Scruggs and Friends album. Other cameos include Steve Martin playing a b@njo lead on "Foggy Mountain"

Billy Bob is doing a gig at The House of Blues this week in Vegas.
I saw him on some interview show, and he said that he was in a band before he was an actor. I think he said it was with his brother.

Gary sure was a class act, I always looked forward to his visits when we were at the old store. What a neat guy and incredible player he was!

I watched the movie Tombstone several times before it dawned on me that Billy Bob was playing the part of Johnny Tyler. Great actor.

Since nobody's actually named the movie in question I guess I will; it's called "Daddy and Them" and if it ever came out in theaters it wasn't for very long; I saw most of it (missed the beginning) on cable last week out on the road. I didn't really care for it but the soundtrack is great, it was put together by Marty Stuart and has a lot of just fantastic solo steel. I thought Marty had done the music and I was curious to see if it was Gary on Steel, and sure enough all the musicians got credit, as well as the very nice dedication to Gary at the very beginning of the credits. And it was fun watching John Prine as a quiet "redneck" bookworm!

Another good movie with Billy Bob-

The Apostle with Robert Duvall. Billy Bob plays (very well) the man that tries to bulldoze the church.

Steel player that has been working with him but I don't know if he is now or not, is a player from Idaho named Billy Johnson. He is living in Nashville now but is presently on the road with another act.

Once again, I am indebted to you, Bobbe !! I wanted to say something about Gary in a thread in Music titled Marty Stuart and Robby Turner but could not out of respect and regard for Robby. So thank you for bringing back these great old memories and stories of Gary. I still have regrets about missing him on his last trip here to Macon with Marty. He was sick and stayed at the hotel and I wouldn't have distured his rest.

I left a note for him and if memory serves me correctly (and it sometimes doesn't these days...) you said he stuck his head in the door on the way to a doctor and said he'd be back. I don't know if I ever heard the rest of that story but I recall being vividly moved when I heard that his Dad had passed away as well.

I think Billy Bob is a great singer after seeing that! (Ha! Ha!)
Seriously, the quality of the singer makes no difference to me, it's the quality of the money they pay you. I'm a steel fan, not a singer fan. How many of you would want to see Ray Price without a steel in the band, if you would, your on the wrong forum! But I do insist on working with a good band, and enjoy hearing one.

re: Dwight not being nice to his fans - I think he's just shy, actually. My comment about Sling Blade - Billy Bob was BRILLIANT! Dwight was awesome. Dwight singing "It won't Hurt" from his first album is BRILLIANT (VERY country!)
Before anyone faints thinking Tommy Dodd is saying this about a non-traditional country artist, I'm his wife. Anytime I get a chance to comment on Dwight, I do so. (Hope I got Tommy's password right! ha.)

Bobby Seymour suggested Gary Houge should be in the Hall of Fame. I'll say amen to that. Gary sure was a nice person. He called me a few years ago when he was playing with Marty Stuart. he wanted me and my driver to be their guests at 3 different fairs. In california and boy was I glad. We had a wonderful time, Gary & Marty rolled out the red carpet. I saw Gary do something I hadnt seen before. He had an amp on both sides of him pointed direct at his ears. God Bless you Gary Houge!

Jimmie: I saw that speaker placement as well when they were here in Macon. I kinda worried about his hearing with those 15 incher's sitting up right at his ear level. It so impressed me that while I was still playing, I placed my stereo speakers on either side of me but not up at that heighth.
It's a whole new world of surround sound !

Junior; If I were a betting man. I'd bet you use the same speaker placement and maybe you even showed Gary how to do it that way...

Bobbe once said you would be the one to ask how Gary's family is doing. Any word about them ?? As you can see from this thread, a lot of people care about them.
