I have sung a few songs while playing, but prefer to sing standing up and playing my Takamine acoustic-electric. I not only project my voice better when standing, I also don't play any out-of-tune notes or chords. I do miss the steel backups and lead breaks, but one does what they must to get paid.

BTW: When I do play sitting at the steel I am playing fills and licks between my words, just like I do for the main singers. I try to make it sound as good as possible. If I am not going to need steel on a song I stand up and play acoustic.

The band lets me sing while I play steel as long as I sing tener.....Ten er 12 miles away. I can sing playing bass but I cannot sing or talk playing steel. I end up singing what I'm playing and it ain't purty. If I had a good voice I might work at it a little harder.

I've sung harmony in almost every band I've been in, but it's a little uncomfortable for me to sing lead from behind a steel. If I'm going to sing lead, I'd rather be standing up with a guitar hiding my beer gut.

I do sing and I do play steel,but I guess it really depends on how you define "singing",and my steel playing really depends on what you call "playing".

Barbara Mandrell is the best I've seen at singing & playing steel at the same time. Saw her at one of the early steel shows (Lee's Summit, MO?) I guess in about '73. She's great to both look at and listen to. Best, Boomer

Yepper I do sing while playing,Steel,Bass,Keyboard,Guitar..the answering thing works fine but sometimes you need to start lines before the vocal ends or starts. Was inspired to develope this technic from an old friend in Pa..George Day
He is on line and still working.George played guitar in his trio so he had to be busy playing while singing. Never forgot that lesson. Bill in Vegas

I sing harmony, usually while just picking some easy chords in the background. It helps me not to try to play every single note of every song.
