Just got the Linda Lay CD. Ricky's picking is superb. You folks have got to check out his work on "We Could" it is A-1 grade A
choice steelin'!!! Ricky man, your tone is great. Must be the Fulawka!!!
If you don't have this CD, then you better head out and locate it 'cause this is some wonderful true country sung by a talented lady and some very tasty steelin' by one of our Forum buddies!!!

| As has been said before, but bears repeating, Ricky's playing is perfection. And more than just that, he is a top-shelf pro who has endlessly and magnanimously given of himself to players with his tabs and posts on "inside" topics about technique, performing, recording, etc. etc., information that non-pros normally could never get. Ricky is an invaluable and irreplaceable asset to our steel guitar community. |

Wow Ricky and Jeff; you guys just put a HUGE smile on my face(of course I always smile..ha) But this is a Huge smile.

I also cut on Linda's new project for Cracker Barrel that will soon be out;. so look for that...>oh and it was my Shobud Pro II that I used on that session, Ricky.

| Wow!! You mean Linda has another CD coming out. I'll be ready as soon as it's available. If it's anything like the first one I'll spend many happy hours playing along. As I said last year, thats the way country is supposed to sound. Thanks again Ricky for all your help, not only on the forum and the tabs but for being willing to help us newer guys with our questions. |

This CD is available at Cracker Barrel Gift Shops.
I agree it's excellent.
I also really like the Bill Kirchen CD they have in the same series. Ricky and Linda guest on a few tunes. The rest is great Rockabilly.
Asleep at the Wheel also has a CD in this series. Big Jim is the Steeler.
Who sez there's no more good music being released? You jus havta know where to look. |

I just bought this CD over the weekend at the local Cracker Barrel. It is First Class! Ricky Davis does some excellent work on the steel and Linda Lay's vocals are great! Classic Country at its best!

Yeah; it´s amazing how creative Ricky is in finding really tasty and well sounding lines to play. That´s true for some other top-of-the-line steel pickers as well, but that doesn´t reduce Ricky´s work.
Is there someting in the water over there, or where does the creativity come from?

Anders; there's nothing special in the water here..ha.....but I have been blessed with many great Mentors that I look up to and worship the ground they walk on....as I only try to follow in their footsteps of Dedication;Professionalism....and willingness to try new things that speak out in the song.
One secret I have is when I sit down to play.......I pretend like I'm Lloyd Green .....and "what would lloyd play here; and what would lloyd NOT play here"....as Lloyd is my most influence in Dedication to the instrument and Song and always looking for something different to musically accent the song and Hearing the song. Lloyd is the King of sitting down to a song and creating the perfect voicings;melody and dynamic turns to anything he puts his steel guitar to...........and that is what I want to do.......and it helps me to think of Lloyd and his many many decades of great steel guitar recording creations that were applied by listening to the song.

| What would Lloyd play with non-traditional or alternative music? What would he do with a guitar player who plays all the time? How could there be any room for steel guitar creativity? Yeah, Ricky - Lloyd is really a unique picker, and he has put more taste and feeling in music than anyone else I´ve heard, and he´s done that for decades. The problem is that he´s lightyears ahead of me, and I would be quite satisfied if I could do just a fraction of what he already did decades ago. But I´ll give your LM (Lloyd Method, he,he!) a try, and see what happens.
We play at a fairly big festival saturday, 60 metric miles (600 kilometers) from here, and that´ll be another nerve test for me.
Hope your elbow is still OK, by the way.

Anders; it's not so much what he plays(eventhough; yes his stuff can be very complex)that is the approach I take; it is more like the way Lloyd approaches the song at hand.
Listen to his dynamics the way he'll take a song and bring it up and bring it down...and answer quietly or speak with authority.
It is all these subtle inflections and phrasing he does that really captures the mood and excitement to every song he records on.
One thing I do; while I'm driving and listening to a song.....is I'll sing/hum or wistle the steel parts....and then do the same with my own inflections; but still trying to capture the texture/mood; that the player is delivering. And of course; I do alot of that with Lloyd Green as the steel player or Jimmy Day...and really anyone that I find influentual to me....but I find Lloyd to be the most influentual to me in the way he will deliver all moods through is perfect phrasing on any given song that fits every song in my opinion.

Well I have about 15 handmade Hawaiian shirts from (now out of business) IslandTexas...and they are all Large...and don't really fit anymore(I lost 25 lbs last year)....so I'll sell 1 or all....50 bucks a piece....email me for pics and I'll snap some shots.....and you'll never see another shirt with that pattern...and they are all made out of Material from Hawaii.
