Help finding a cut with steel on Haggard song

Post by Bill Myrick »

I have purchased three Haggard tapes and an expensive CD with 43 late recorded hits on it and all four have lead guitar intros and turnarounds on "If We Make It Through December" Where can I find a cut using the steel ? I know it's someplace as I hear it on the radio. Sounds like Norm, maybe. I need to learn it. Thanx

Tip - get any live Hag album. Norm's in there in great form.

Bill, if you make it thru December with this post, you'll be fine.Haha I haven't heard any with the steel intro yet but I'll keep looking for you.

Well darn it guys, I know I'm getting old and senile but I also am 99% sure I've heard it that way on Dan Henchels' show not long ago. Someone said it may be on a "recorded live" album someplace and someone else said Allen Jackson had a cut of it with the steel intro and turn so maybe it was him I heard. He can sound like so many other singers it's amazing to me.

I thought that song had a steel intro too. I think I was confusing it with "If We're Not Back In Love By Monday." It sounds like the steel intro to "Monday" would make a great intro to "December" too.

Hey Bill, I've got 'em both. There on the "Down Every Road" 4 cd collection that Capital put out, I love that into too.

Thanks Joe !!!! Finally someone can justify I'm not losing it completely !! Yesterday I found this 4 CD set in a music store here but------ whew----I don't think I'll go 60.00 just to get the intro to the song !
It's a great set of Haggard songs however--it's just that I have about all of them already.

Bill,

I've got the "Down Every Road" box set and just checked it yesterday. "If we make it through december" does not have steel on it at all. The intro and most of the lead is done by an acoustic. "Back in Love by Monday" however, did have a beautiful steel intro.

I'm still checking through all of my albums and CD's to see if I have it. Will get back with you.

Bill,

Here is a post that Norm responded to back in November of last year. You can get his email address off of it.

I think the problem is solved !!! Peter Dollard wins the cigar !! I went to The Record Ladies' site and finally found "If We're Not Back In Love By Monday" and WALLA ! That's what I heard all along but it sure is superior to the guitar intro on "December" IMHO ---now for a good night's rest !! - Image

In my opinion, Merle's best version of that song is on "Live At Billy Bob's"; ditto for every other song on that CD.

Someone mentioned AJ's version with PF on steel. I believe the intro is lead guitar but there is a nice steel turn around. I believe it's on Alan's Honky Tonk Christmas CD.
