Is anybody familiar with this album? Does anybody know if Doug used pick blocking on those incredible and incredibly fast tunes? "I'll fly away" etc.

On one of Doug's instructional courses, he says the only time he pick blocks is when he hits the string for the next note when fast picking. The rest of the time, he palm blocks.

I am not sure about the blocking but I do know the album is very good. Doug has a couple really fast tunes that will get your fingers all twisted up. It is pure steel with no effects from one of the all time great players. I believe the man deserves more credit than he has been given. It you want a good gospel album this is the one to buy...Paul King

His Jazz by Jernigan was an eye opener.

I imagine he is blockeing with both hands.
Thumb and forefinger left, and any part that works with the right.
It's the only way I can see it can be done that cleanly.
I also suspect he plays many lines with just the tip of the bar.
Too cool for school.

If you can still find it, he made a recording back in the 70's with Jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli.

"Doug & Bucky". It blew me away then. It still sets a pretty slick pace.

It really opened my ears to steel and got me started on wanting to play steel then... it just took another 28 years for me to get started.

As everyone else has stated Doug Jernigan is one of the best, and in my opinion one of all time great steel guitarists. I've admired his playing for about 30 years and have all of his L.P.s, tapes, CDs. You might want to check out his other Gospel Steel recording titled "My Ministry."

What I admire most about Doug Jernigan though is that he has chosen to glorify and praise GOD through the talent that he has been so graciously blessed with.

May GOD bless each of you!
