Talon - Eagles tribute band

Post by Colin Goss »

Our local paper hearlded the forthcoming gigs of Talon. It added "This year there is a new addition to the outfit - Sarah Jory, considered to be one of the top five steel guitarists in the world, lending her talents to the group on pedal steel guitar".

Top five????????????????????

I have a feeling that there will shortly be more than five names appearing in this topic, pushing her somewhat further down the list.

Whoa! This evaluation gets around.
On a bio of Barbara Mandrell the comment was made that while still a teen-ager she was one of the 5 best steel players in the world.
I didn't realize that back in those days there were so many bad steel players!

C'Mon guys - playing steel isn't a competition!
I'm looking forward to seeing Sarah live at the British Steel Festival in about four weeks time. I remember reading in a steel mag a while ago that someone - a steel player himself - had heard her on the radio and was convinced he was listening to Buddy Emmons! That's good enough for me!

I think that Sarah would be embarrassed by the advertised hype. She is a fine player, but the top 100 players in the world would not feature a European player in my opinion, and there are some superb players on this side of the pond.

Do I sense a little spot of jelousey from some of the UK players? Come on guys, Sarah Jory is one hell of a steel player, and can hold her own with any player from USA or Europe. Give credit where credit is due.

Anyway... I don't know what all you are complaining about,
If I COULD play as well as her,I don't think I'm quite as good looking.
I have to follow her act, I'm on immediately after her at the Newbury Festival !!!

(That's the time everyone goes out for a quick cup of tea etc. or whatever !)

Twice her age , twice her size, half her talent and a VERY shakey right hand...that's me !!
(Over the hill....what hill)

UH !

Ted - no jealousy from my angle. Sarah is special to me and always will be. She was without doubt one of the best pupils that I had. I'm just realistic in that the top 5 players in the world would come from the USA - period. We all have our own preferences of the top rated players. They get there because of technical ability, originality and style. The real great players are those who you would instantly recognise if you hear them on the radio. The top UK player in my view is Peter Hayward, and he definitely is world class.
