I live and work out of Atlanta,GA and have a fly date gig out in LA in June. I just talked to the folks at the label who said they were arranging to rent all the equipment needed so we don't have to carry anything. Well, that sounds fine and dandy for everyone but me. I can pull my GP-100 out of the rack and take it in my suitcase along with volume pedal, cords, bar and picks with no problem. But, I think finding a suitable steel guitar and seat in LA will be a chore! I just checked and S.I.R. in LA has a Nashville 400 listed on their website but no mention of a pedal steel. Has anyone had any luck renting a pedal steel out on the road or is there anyone in the LA area with a LeGrande or Carter with Emmons setup that might be willing to rent for a one nighter?
P.S. Thanks to Mike Perlowin and Boo Bernstein for your help and suggestions.

I think it's supposed to be a joke:

"Sorry

I

Rented"
equals

Well, I'm going to jump in with my 2 cents:
Since you mentioned talking with Mike & Boo, to me what would be the quick solution is to locate someone out there (that maybe Mike & Boo might know) other than a company that would have an S-10 that gets close, if not nails your setup so you could get the job done without too much 'thinking'. Having lived in the SFV for 8 yrs., I know the scene a little, & if I were coming back just for a hit & run, that's what I'd do. There are plenty of West Coast steelers out there & I would think at least one would step forward to lend you a hand.
But if not, then that leads me to the 2nd suggestion which would be to find & buy the lightest S-10 (or 12, I played a U-12 for 23 yrs.) as souped up as you need as thinking positively, this situation will arise again. Then by being practiced on it & knowing your smaller & lighter steel's "isms", you'd be cutting the "seat of your pants" situation down quite a bit.
Anyway, FWIW. Hope it all works out.

Take your steel guitar and let them rent you an amp and throne. Pack your volume pedal and effects in a suitcase.
It won't cost extra and you'll be happy having a guitar you know when you're playing in L.A.
For me it's always been worth the effort to have my own guitar.
Good Luck.

Thanks guys for the input. I think I'll just go ahead and take my Carter since it weighs a little less than the Emmons and I'll either ship it out to the LA contact a few days early or I'll just gaff tape the crap out of my case and fly it. Won't be the first time a regular case covered in tape has been flown. I just worry that with all the trouble lately that security will want to look inside the case and they'll take off all the tape and I won't have any way of securing the latches back then.

Although I love playing steel, there are 3 things that really get under my skin:

1. Having a "Front of House" guy that doesn't have a clue about mixing steel.
2. Asking for a Nashville 400 to be in the back line and when you get there finding a Peavey Bandit (or worse).
3. When it's time to lay someone off, the steeler is the first to go.
[off my soap box]
