Just rec'd a wonderful CD "MUSIC OF THE ISLANDS....Hawaii"......... For those of you that truly enjoy Hawaiian Music and the
"old" traditional steel guitar style and tone, you won't want to miss this one!
The entire group puts forth a wonderful peformance.....not a side B tune anywhere.
KEOKI..George Lake from way up by the Artic Circle, he who lives in an igloo and gets around with a full blown dog sled team, is the steelman on this CD. He is truly great! His licks are all authentic Hawaiian except for one that was actually NASHVILLE Country.........but one can over look it. It was done with class and flavored the phrase nicely. Email Keoki NOW! You won't want to miss out on this CD. Available CD's are limited.......so get on the list right away.
He plays a vintage double neck National...
and also a vintage National TriCone (I think). Of course ole George is vintage himself........uses vintage guitar strings that he's had for decades........so he can produce that rich, full bodied Hawaiian sound

Ahh shucks guys, thanks. I gotta correct you on my guitars Ray...I used a custom double neck TRADEWIND built especially for me by Elva West in Anaheim, CA. For the acoustic stuff, I used my 1934 Dobro. Of course, the only amp I ever use is a Fender Deluxe reverb with tubes for a nice full warm sound.
There's a polar bear outside my igloo so I had better attend to him now....

Keoki.......I must apologize to you and everyone here on the Forum. When I attempted to describe what you played on the CD....I had no idea whatsoever WHAT it was you were plucking, but knowing what a perfectionist you are and how very much you are into vintage instruments I figured I might be somewhat close, but one can see I errored in judgement........BIG TIME!
Well one thing I'm reasonably sure about gang........is that Keoki plays with four finger picks and a LARGE BLUE plastic thumbpick. Tell me I'm wrong George......I double dare you.

Keoki, did you use F#9 tuning alot on your CD? Where can I get a copy? I have been working on the F#9 tuning alot lately, getting the chords and intervals down that I got off of Ricky Davis's chord finder. F#9 has a great jazz feel to it. Does antbody know of any tab in this tuning?

I usually use F#9 whenever I play a 6 string guitar. On the cd I used A6/7 and E9 tunings as I was playing a double 8 steel guitar. My email address is keokilake@hotmail.com should you want to write me.

Well, with endorsements from both Ray Montee and Jody Carver, I had to hear this CD. Now I can say from first hand experience that George Lake is a super guy and a talented steel guitarist. If you want to hear fabulous tone and phrasing, as well an excellent band, I highly recommend contacting George Lake to see if he has any of these CD's left.

I heard rumors from both Australia and Finland that Keoki's CD is all sold out.

Any chance he'll make another?

I just realized that today is George Lake's birthday, so Happy Birthday George! I hope you had the time to enjoy it today. If I lived a few thousand miles closer, I'd bake you a cake myself.

Maika'i loa Kerry...yep, hit 75 today, however I prefer to tell people I am only 40/35...amounts to the same thing but sounds much younger ! Had some nice phone calls, even my pal in eastern Canada (George Rout) spent 25 cents on a call. It's probably the biggest investment he has ever made! E-mail the cake, Kerry.

Keoki-Just had to wish you a happy birthday and many more to come. I used to love and play hawaiian music. Where can I get that CD?

I remember in 1936 playing at a private club in Rochester,Ny and all the member of the band were great musicians and attending Eastman School of Music. It was called the Hawaiian Room, hula girls and all. I learned a lot from them. I was the worst musician in the band....ahh memories.eh.....al

Aloha Al...

I endeavored to e-mail you on your Forum e-mail address to no avail. Anyway, you asked where you could obtain a copy of the cd we made. Well, my friend, just pop a $20.00 bill in an envelope, mail it to me with your current snail address. I'll be sure to send you a copy (pp) without any delay. If I do say so myself, it is a lovely album of Hawaiian music. Forum friends Jody and Ray have both shown their enthusiasm towards it which is about as complimentary as one can hope for.

For security, please wrap the $20.00 bill in a normal piece of paper before placing it in the envelope. You need not worry...I am an honest person. I prefer cash as the banks up here place a hefty (penalty) "service" charge on all m/o or checks coming in from outside of Canada.

My address: 11610 - 111 Av.,
Edmonton, AB., Canada
T5G-0E1

Mahalo Al....hope to hear from you, or any others on the Forum who might be interested.

I received my copy of "Music of The Islands" from George Lake and I concur with Ray. It is a great Hawaiian CD. George "Keoki" Lake did a wonderful job backing Toutai Pasi, the vocalist on the CD. Toutai, a native of the island of Tonga, has a very smooth singing voice.
