I was on my way home from church Sunday night when I heard the song "Hello Mrs. Johnson." It had some nice steel licks on it. I am just wondering who played the steel on that record. I am not for sure but it sounded like Cal Smith singing but I could be wrong....Paul |

Paul,
Cal Smith was the one who had that song out, and the fine steel work was done by the GREAT John Hughey.

I always thought it was Buddy Charleton on that record, can someone confirm that it was indeed John Hughey? |

Jim, I certify and confirm that it was John Hughey playing steel on this recording. Seriously, this was discussed in an earlier thread and John posted that he did in fact record on it. I had always thought it was Weldon but after listening to it again one has no trouble recognizing John Hughey all through the song. |

I think that 'Whisperin' Bill Anderson wrote that little ditty.

Yes David it was Bill Anderson who wrote that song. I read this in an interview he did a year or two ago. He had pitched the song to Charlie Walker, but Charlie's record label wouldn't let him record it because they felt the song was too contreversial. Somehow the song fell into Cal Smith's hands and became Cal's first #1 record. Just another feather in Bill Anderson's songwriting cap!!! Jason |
