Hey folks,
We've got a newbie on the forum here (Kenny Brown) that needs a steel instructor/mentor in the Auburn, Alabama area.
I thought I'd help him out by starting this thread. Thanks to Steve Stallings doing the same thing for me 13 months ago, I ended up getting with an excellent steeler that became my instructor and good friend.
How about it folks, do you know anybody that can help?

Hi Bryan, Just thought we should let every one know you made your public debut on steel
earlier this month at the Jugtown Steel Guitar Club meeting/jam. Folks he did a swell job. Bryan is a "lefty" lead guitar picker who decided to go it right handed on the steel. His instructor and fellow club member, Jack Williams, is doing a great job bringing Bryan along.

Thanks,
Bryan

Hey Bryan, thanks for starting this thread.
I appreciate it!
Maybe something will turn up and I'm still looking/asking around too.
Thanks,
Kenny
--My steel arrives.....MONDAY!!--The worst part is that IT left MONTGOMERY this AM @1:30--that means it has to be in town but the UPS lady said I cannot pick it up before the "scheduled delivery date"--Monday
It won't be long now!

The best of luck with your new steel! I'd be happy to provide lessons, but I think I'm just a bit too far

Kenny, you might be able to locate Bill Johnson, for many years he played steel for the late Marty Robbins...Bill now lives near Auburn in Electic. Perhaps he could help...
And Bryan, congrats on your RH dabut, I played left handed for a time and Shot Jackson helped me to change to RH and I will forever be grateful, to change overnight was a challange but I think the good folks at Jack's Tavern in Notasulga,Ala hardly noticed as they were a hard drinking bunch in 1966 |

Jacks was on hwy14 I think about 2 mi. east of the Metro area...I do remember it was only 2mi to the Jail...one Sun in the 60s I went down to the jail to get someone out, the Police Chief was at church services and would not be available until after 12noon,I spotted the cell keys on a desk...
I single handedly freed all his prisoners, tossed his keys on the desk, and left town never to return.
Fredie Hart and I were discussing this just after the New Year Holiday and agreed its time for me to go back and "fess up!"
Fred,by the way, is a native of Lochapoka,Ala
Is it still there? |

Yeah the rush hour traffic in Metro Notasulga can be tough at times--if one has ever lived there, then they usually figure out a "method to the madness".
I usually go straight through the "concrete jungle" when I go through there--next time I'll remember to take the "Hwy 14 Bypass" and check out Jack's to see if it's still there.
Loachapoka, AL is still there--"Syrup Soppin" every October is a good event with a crowd of folks, the rest of the year 'Poka is about as busy as downtown Notasulga.
