You got that right on Ralph Mike, I have great memories of Ralph. Talked to him about a month ago. What a great picker and person.
I worked with Wynn Stewart for over 5 years at George's Round-Up in Long Beach. Wynn was a great singer and person to work for. Ralph did about 99 % of Wynn's records. Man we loved that Mooney sound and still do.

Melinda, Ralph played a 1000 with Wynn but as guitars evolved so did Ralph. By the time he worked with Waylon he had a Sho-Bud. He now plays a GFI.

| There was some discussion a while back on here about who played on It's Such Pretty Day" and I can't remember who it was but it I don't think it was Ralph. I always thought it was but someone here knew it for sure. Anyone know who it was? |

| It's such a pretty world today was played by Jimmy Collins and by Sonny Garrish.The Collins version was recorded on Capitol and the Garrish version was recorded by K-TEL. If you like Wynn's music, you can get all of his recordings from the Bear Family box set which you can get from Wynn's daughter Wren.Wren's E-mail address is wren@wynnstewart.com I bought this box set from her several months ago and she was very prompt. |

| Melinda....the box set is well worth the cost...in addition to CD's of all of his published music it includes a number of unissued songs and a booklet which has a lot of biographical info and a section which presents his sessionography...that is...who played , when they played , what songs they played..studio kind of info...everything. good luck |

Thw Wynn Stewart album that is my favourite is like a greatest hits collection. It's "The Very Best of Wynn Stewart, 1958-1962".
Is Ralph Mooney on there? I really like the sound of the steel on ALL of those songs. I'm not sure I exactly like ALL of the fiddle players' stylings the most though.

Jason Odd knows all this stuff! I enquired about the guitar-player on Wynn's 'Man, Man, Mr Sandman' expecting the answer to be James Burton, but Jason put me straight - it was Clarence White.
GREAT steel and guitar on that track!
Maybe Jason will reply here, but he's probably asleep right now in 'Oz'.... |

Okay JO, here's a question that has been bugging the daylights out of me for years!
Back in early 1969, during the recording of Ronstadt's "Hand Sown Home Grown" album, Red Rhodes, Dick Rosmini, Clarence and I went out to dinner and the subject came up about "Pretty World." I allowed as how I thought Mooney played his ass off on that one, and both Clarence and Red said "nah, it's Leo LeBlanc on Pretty World."
Well, it's fairly common knowledge now, and certainly on info I've gotten from Mooney as well as Hap Arnold, that it was Jimmy Collins on "Pretty World." But the question is... since I don't have a Wynn Stewart discography... did Leo LeBlanc play on ANY of Windy's records, and if so, which ones?

I used to jam with Jimmy Collins many years ago in a dive outside of Yakima WA, and he certainly claimed to have played on that cut. He was a great player, also a Fender 1000 guy. Great sound. Great mustache....

Leo LeBlanc did play with Wynn Stewart, he might have been on one of his records but I don't have any knowledge of that. He probably played on a few sessions for Wynn but I don't know of any in particular.
Yeah I know...I'm not any help here...if anyone knows more please drop me an email.
FWIW...it doesn't really sound like Leo to me on "Pretty World"...Leo was a big Mooney fan and did a pretty good job of emulating his style but it doesn't sound like his guitar to me.

Leo is not officially listed on any of Wynn's sessions.
However, it seems that Wynn was an absolute freak for cutting demos, and he might have cut versions of Pretty World with Leo and Carl West at different times.
The studio version of 'Pretty World' that we all know was indeed cut in 1966 with Jimmy Collins, who at the time was part of Wynn's road band the Tourists. |
