Yep....Ivan is living in Arizona, saw him last week. I was working at Harrah's Ak Chin Casino (Apache Indian Reservation), and Ivan was in the audience.

Ivan was the house player at Mr. Lucky's in Phoenix during most of the time I lived there in the mid 70s. Truly an amazing player as Smiley says. (When he left, or soon after, Danny Snead came in so they had a run of impossibly great players in there back then!) I was teaching in Calif and just moved to Phoenix in 1969 and I kicked around and had sessions with a guy who taught steel in Glendale Muisc Center and played in the house band at Mr. Lucky's .
He had a Beautiful ZB with D9 tuning on top and D6 on the bottom. He got a nice tone and played very well.
With D9 , he didnt have to worry about the high G# breaking as it was F#. I am ashamed to say that his name eludes me at the moment. I must be getting old. Hey Billy Easton, Help.....al [This message was edited by Al Marcus on 24 January 2003 at 04:44 PM.] |

Thanks guys. I heard he is an awesome player. I thought I remembered the name from the old Luisiana Hayride era. Chris, I've known Danny Sneed since he was about 13 years old. And I can tell you that he is deffinatly a hard one to follow. |

Hello Al Marcus...
I moved to Phoenix in 1969 or 1970, but I think you may be talking about Stan Oscarson.
Stan was a great player, but contracted cancer about the time I moved there and met him. He passed away shortly thereafter. Is he the one you are referring to?

I've heard stories about Ivan since I first starting learning about the steel. In East Texas (where I started), he was legendary way back then. Since being here in Arizona (3-years)I have heard he was in the area but I hadn't crossed paths with him.
Yesterday, at day one of the Winter Steel Jam, I was introduced to Ivan. I saw him there again today and we chatted for just a moment. I still haven't had the pleasure of hearing him but his reputation preceeds him in a big way. (Danny Sneed is absolutely a monster and needs to be heard by the masses).
