Topic: Alternative Mix? |

| Can anyone tell me, when this alternative mix thing got started? Is this just something for the radio stations, or are the actual records sold with more or less steel guitar? Somehow it doesn't seem right.How do the rest of you feel on this issue? |

I don't know when it got started, but I'll bet it was quite a number of years ago. We've been kicking it around here since Shania began doing it and the Dixie Chicks declined to do it for, I believe, European distribution.
I understand the market forces that compel companies and artists to do this. It does strike me as a little disingenuous, more like sacrilegious if the steel is removed  . It’s a harmless manipulative ploy to be all things to all people.
I guess the only real conflict arises when a performance is involved where a choice has to be made as to which mix play. Someone is bound to be disappointed.

Hey Neil, I remember, in the early 80's,
hearing a cut of the Juice Newton tune "The Sweetest Thing" on radio minus the steel....I believe they subbed a keyboard for the steel..really annoyed me...first time I remember this happening although I'm sure it happened many times before...
As to the distribution of the 2 versions, I haven't a clue, but I never heard anyone say they got that record minus steel so maybe the "steel-less" versions were only given to radio?

| Jerry, It will be interesting to see if in the future, with all of todays technology and the "need" to please everyone and be the biggest, best & most popular etc; if this practice will become more common? Thanks for your reply. |

I'm pretty sure Earnest Bovine played steel on that Juice Newton cut and Doug Livingstone played keys - or maybe it's the other way around...
