Yeah,so you are ready to jump on me,I know, big deal,Its really "The Eyes Of Texas Are Upon You" all the live long day.

The Eyes of Texas are upon you,you cannot get away..my question is,,Who wants to get away?? you undertand what Im saying?

I wished I was from Texas,I always did,but
why do they call Texas the "Lone Star" state?
cant they afford another Star?? The wear fancy western clothes and Luchese boots made
of alligator skin and they wear expensive Rolex Watches made of pure gold..so whats this? they cant afford another Star??.you undertand what Im saying??

Cant they buy a Star? so the lone star has a friend? you understand what Im saying here?

All of my life, I wished I was born in Texas.
Im ashamed to tell people where I was born.

People would say to me,,Hey,,how come you play like that and talk different than you play??

They would say,Hey where you from?? I told them Brooklyn NY and they would say, well how come you play like your'e from Texas when you come from Brooklyn?

So I decided not to speak when I played, the hell with all of them. One time I had to bring a quad to Leon McAuliffe when he was playing a big show for the CMA here in NY.

I took my quad for Leon, he didnt use my tunings, why you ask??? who knows, maybe because they were from Brooklyn. You undertand what Im saying here?

Leon was Fender endorser,so he said to me,why
dont you play steel and work with the band and I'll do the singing and M ceeing,,I said
OK.

I played Texas Playboy Rag and a few others
Leon said....wow you play great..what part of Texas are you from,I was afraid to tell him the truth,so I just smiled and said nothing.

The guys in the band said,,,man, you really play good where ya from?? I had to tell the truth, I said well???? New York and they all said out loud NEW YORK CITY??????????????????

I was ashamed of myself but I had to tell the truth. The fiddle player said, how'd ya learn to play thata way if yer from New York
City?? I said I dunno. I just play that way.

All my life I was ashamed to tell people where I was born,so I kept my mouth shut and when they asked me something,I would pretend
I was a mute,and I would motion for someone
to give me a piece of paper and I would write. IM FROM TEXAS & What the hell R ya gonna do about that??.

I was p.......d off at my father..why did he
he have to do it to my mother in Brooklyn??
couldnt he have taken a plane and do it to my mother in TEXAS?? you understand what Im talking about so far??

Everbody famous comes from Texas,

Tex Ritter, but they dont know the truth,he really came from Brooklyn like me and his real name was Moishe Rittenstein, but he fooled everyone into believing he was from Texas..
Tex Williams,,you got proof he's from Texas?
Oh yeah,,did you ever see his birth certificate? you understand what Im talking about??

T.Texas Tyler what proof you have he's from Texas? Tex this..Tex that isnt anyone from someplace elso??? Everything is Texas, the Texas Plaboys,Bob Wills how do you know these
guys are not imposters?? did you know their
fathers and mothers?? You undertand what Im talking about,,these are the facts and the questions.

San Antonio Rose,,big deal,,they sing about one woman by the name of Rose,I know a hundred woman by the name of Rose who comes from Brooklyn, nobody sings about them, you understand what Im saying here??.

The Eyes of Texas are Upon You??? why should
the eyes of Texas be looking at me?? I didnt do anything to them.

I never heard of a song called "The Eyes Of Brooklyn are upon you". If I did I would be
afraid it would be the "Mafia" looking at me.
You undertand what Im gettin at here?

So I liked Western Swing,so do you have to be from the west to like Western Swing??????
If you like Italian music,do you have to speak like an Italian..you like greek music?
do you have to do what the greeks do?? thats
their own personal business none of yours you understand what Im getting at??

You like New York Music,,where they repeat themselves and sing New York New York,,,why I hear them the first time,,,and that skinny
Italian who wants to take New York away because he had a load of money and he went around singing,,I'll take Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island too..this guy wants all that area that the Indians sold for $24.00,,no wonder the Indians hate us. You understand me,,think about this, its important
to know the facts,,forget what the other guy
uses on his tunings who cares..

You ever hear anything about Tennesee?? yeah
one dammed song,,Tennesee Saturday Night,you
know why?? I'll tell you why...Tennesee is only open one night a week thats why, its closed the rest of the week, people hide the
other six days, you never realized that did you?? ha,now you know the truth of the matter.

San Francisco,,,big deal some Italian guy left his heart that 30 years ago and he's still singing about it,why dont they give him
a transplant?? Im sick of hearing him cry about where he left his heart.

I left my pants in Walmart,,anybody give a damm about me?? Would someone write a song about me?? No,,,you know why??? because Im from Brooklyn.

Its my fathers fault,he should have did it to
my mother in Texas and not in Brooklyn,,,what
was his hurry?? you understand what Im saying
here??use some common sense.

If he had to do it in Brooklyn why didnt he drive to Texas and do it to my mother there and then take me home.?? you see why Im like Iam??

What was his problem?? you ever hear of a song called Brooklyn Playboy Rag?? I didnt so you see what I have been up against all these years.??

I'll be back with the rest of the story.

The Eyes Of Brooklyn are Upon Me?? who? the hookers? and the muggers?? who? you tell me.

The Eyes Of Florida are Upon You?? the people
in Florida cant even open their eyes,,its too hot and humid and sunny and the sun bothers their eyes....you understand what Im talkin about here??,,,see you didnt realize this before,,now you know the truth. This is the truth of the matter. Dont be fooled,,no bodys really from Texas,,only George W. and
now he's from Washington, where he replaced
Bill Clinton,,you wanna hear about him?? well
maybe some other time,I have to go,Monica wants me

I'll be back

Tex Carver from the Lone Star State.
Where Men are Men and ,,,I cant say the rest
Howard R teaches me bad things. Yeah speaking of Howard R.did you know Howard was born in Texas?? he was but he keeps it quiet.

You undertand what Im saying here??? later

Look at Philadelphia the City Of Brotherly Love,,Oh yeah...well how come one of my brothers stole an amp from my car??..with brothers like that,,I need a Sisterly Love.

They brag about their lousy bell,,even thats
cracked. You think Johnny Cash is the first guy to wear black clothes?? I knew a Rabbi who wore those Black clothes before Johnny walked the line". Does he have to brag about a brother named Sue?,,I know lots
of guys who walk funny. The Rabbis name was
Rabbi Credit Card,,he didnt beleive in Cash.
He didnt like handling dirty money.

Jody,
Don't feel bad. I had a friend,(believe it or not) that they called "Tex". He was born in Louisiana, but he got pissed-off if you called him "Louise"!!

BTW,"Tex" Williams was born Jack Willams,Aug. 23,1917,in (near) Ramsey,Ill. I don't suppose he liked it either,if you called him,"Ill"!!

Okay.so some of you think Im bananas so what.

But I'll tell you this,I did get your attention didnt I ??

This is a GREAT SE-GUE for the reason I posted this nonsence.

But since Im not ready until ya'll get a sense of humor, you will have to wait,,so
dont reply cause I wont reply gosh darn it.

I have one more story before I saddle up my pony and head for the hills where I should have stayed in the first place, BUT I waited for this opportunity to tell my story.

It is about a good friend of mine for over 50 years and he is deserving of what I will tell about him whether you like it or not,,,,

Thats your problem..so wait until Im ready.
If you reply I wont acknowledge so dont waste
your time...one more,,just one more.

Later... The band is tuning up and doing a sound check. And I promise I'll be back.
This had better last you guys,,

As promised Im back. Not to your suprise I'm
sure, but to tell about someone who has been a
friend to me for over 50 years or so,

What I posted above was in "jest" so far as my being ashamed as to where I hailed from.
Its obivious to me that none of you took it as a prank and thought I was serious.Thats the sad part about posting here on the Forum, you cant see the expression of ones face.

I wanted to catch your eye and thought, well
this will do it and it did. So I will proceed

Back in the late 40's and even earlier, anyone
playing what was called Hillbilly music was
frowned upon,it was "snafu" to this part of the country, with the few exceptions such as
Pennsylvania and such,Hillbilly as it was then called among other things I cant repeat
was commonplace.

Growing up in Brooklyn NY had no advantages as far as Western Music,Country Music, and the
so called "Country Western".

We all know this day and age, that is NOT the case. Country music is widely accepted today
in this part of the country as well as all over the world.

There were few radio stations playing our kind of music, one of them was my dad who broadcasted over WOR WMCA WOV WLIB,the others
were broadcasted out of NJ, WAAT WVNJ and that was the extent of it.

The only places people with our(I use that as though we are the only ones) I have to be careful how I place my words here as I have learned the hard way on here many times before. The Music we love was accepted ONLY
in honkey tonks and places near and around the Brooklyn Navy Yard where the a great amount of our service men frequented the honly tonks in order to bring them memories
of home,wherever that may be.

I was one of those who struggled over the years to make a dollar to support my family,
there were others smarter than I who used the
music as a fun thing and a place to play and
make a few bucks from the music they loved.

If it were not for a Nightclub in Greenwich
Village NY by the name of "The Village Barn"
I would have starved to death.

The "Barn" was not per say a country music
club but one that had great entertainment as
well as good food.

Many major league ballplayers would often come to the Barn for good music and great food at a reasonable price.

My dad worked at the Barn since 1932 and he raised a family the hard way, making a living
out of playing the music we all love. His primary talent was that of a showman and not as a musician although he could have played with the best of them. Many well known people
started at the "Barn" Mitchell Ayres,Helen O'Connell,Vic Damone,Sid Caeser and Imogene
Coco (sp_?) and in my time at the Barn it was
Danny Davis and his orchestra (now the Nashville Brass).

Im trying to paint a picture for you, maybe the paint will be spilled on me after this I dont know and I dont really care. Im going to finish this and start another post so I dont wear you out OK..stay put I'll be right back.

There you go Jody, ah er Tex. rant ; Hey fella ,good story . My mother always told me I was born in La. , Never could find a birth certificate in La. to proveit. The story floated around the family, bout my mom riding the train to La. from Texas with her three little boys. I`ve always wondered why she didnt want us to grow up thinking we were born in Tzas.

Thats where she met my dad, they got married there , lived there ,where he worked in a saw mill. I` ve always wondered if I was a Texan. Hey what does it matter .

Im back.(OH heres that boring guy again with another long story) sure so what? My stories
are about others not myself,I have never bragged on myself, not have I insulted anyone
like I have seen on this Forum, never used abusive language or insinuated that someone
was a drag, never. So Im taking advantage of this last time to say a few things about my friend Hank Pell and his brother Sonny Pell.

I first met Hank & Sonny when I was playing at a club on the boardwalk in Coney Island,
NO I wasnt a freak and I wasnt selling hot dogs,,,but the guys that sold the hot dogs made more money than I did.

Hank & Sonny would come in often and I would ask them to get up on the bandstand and sing a few songs. They were influenced by people
such as The Louvin Brothers,Johnny& Jack &
The Wilburn Brothers.

Although Hank & Sonny hailed from Brooklyn they were "dipped in pure country" that was their love, man they loved country music, the more country the better.

They sang great duets and I struggled to keep
up with them as I was trying to be a Joaquin
Murphey at that time amd I had to play down
the hot licks and do the country flavored steel parts.

Hank & Sonny played music as a sideline and not for the money, had they continued thay may have been sucessful, but since they were from that awful place called Brooklyn, their
chances were dim.

We became close friends and Hank started playing steel and then fiddle and then lead guitar,in addition to having a good voice he
was and still is a talented guy.

Sonny passed away a few years back,at a relativley young age of 51. Hank stopped playing for a while,he lost his brother and partner and that slowed him down.

About 10 years ago Hank and a few others started a Western Swing Band, they did everything from pure country to pop to latin
and Hawaiian and they were great.

The Band was called The Texas Panhandle Band
and although only one was from Texas, one would never know these people were from that awful place called Brooklyn New York.

The band had another Pell,,,this one was a young and handsome dude by the name of Johnny
Pell,Hanks oldest son. This kid could have made it in Hollywood as a movie star he is that handsome, wow, the girls would scream when
he started to sing.I was at the club they were playing one night and I heard the best
dammed music I have ever heard.

Johnny Pell is what I call a young Bobby Darin who could sing and swing with the best of them.

The rest of the band consisted of Hank on Steel,Rick Martinez from Higgins Texas..yeah there was one Texan in the group so they had a right to call it the Panhandle Band dontcha
think?

Hank tripled on steel, lead, fiddle and sang up a storm doing the country and western classics. They could change the mood in the wink of an eye.One minute they would do Bluegrass and Bill Monoroe music with their
own special touch,,then swing over to the Western classic and do smooth songs like the
Sons Of The Pioneers and Andy Parker and the
Plainsmen.

Rick did his vocals like the late Tommy Duncan and the band backed him every bit as good as the Bob Wills band although the group was smaller than Bob Wills they had that special sound.."The Texas Sound" the sound that I love as much as they do.

They are still playing here and there in this
area and packing them in with their versatile
style of music,Hank does not belong to this Forum or any other Forum,he spends his time doing arrangements for the group and booking
the group and they are booked solid all the time.

This is the lineup of musicians

Hank Pell steel, lead, fiddle, rhythm guitar and vocals.

Johnny Pell Fender (what else) Bass and great vocals..Johnny adds the modern sound to the group with his swinging Darin and Sinatra style of singing and his good looks add to his talent.
Al Varialle (who recently passed away) on drums,( god rest his soul)

Don Cogan another bass player who doubles on lead guitar and sings up a storm.

Paul Payole who now is the drummer and last but not least (as they say)
Sue Rose as in "San Antonio Rose".

They have a few CD's which at this time are
not for sale,WHY?? because they give them to fans and customers and they are not using the CD to make money but to make friends and
keep the customers coming back for more, and that they do.

Here is their latest CD

All Of Me vocal by Johnny Darin Sinatra Pell
Hang Your Head In Shame (which is whatIm doing because Im from Brooklyn)
Sooner or Later vocal by Texas own Rick Martinez.
My world ended today with twin fiddles.
Red Wagon vocal by Hank Pell and twin steels and I wont mention the guy playing twin steel cause he too is from Brooklyn.

There is something for everyone to enjoy and
most of all I wanted to post this for a long long time, but I feared having the flame throwers on me as they did to my friend Ray Montee recently..I dont need that, I dont want that.

I promised myself that before I retire from this Forum I would mention my friends as I did and that is my reason for starting this thread in the first place.

I have been insulted by e mail, cursed at by some person with a problem and have been ridiculed as a boring guy.

I have seen others publicly say "Im outta here" and then sheepishly return a few weeks
later. Sure there are good people on here, but there are others as well. Sure it becomes addicting we all know that, I had held back on posting what I did for my friends and for them Im proud to know them.

I doubt that you will see any more posts in the future from me,NO Im not joshing or threatening,Im making a promise right here and now.

My wife has been ill and there was a time recently that I almost lost her,but I continued trying to make you smile at my stories, whereas you should under the circumstances have tried to make me smile.

So far as a the people I have prayed for I will continue to do so in the privacy of my home..I will NOT lurk as others do..Why look
at a piece of pie when you cant eat it??????

So my friends and to Bobby Lee,,thank you and for the others whoever they may be,,there is help for you, come to Brooklyn and maybe I can help you find it.

Goodbye

Jody "A guy from Brooklyn PS excuse my lousy spelling,,,what do you expect from a guy from Brooklyn GOODBYE and HAPPY NEW YEAR. If you dont like me or what I write fine,,go to the nearest book store buy my book and tear out the pages that annoy you.

It wont bother me none, just pay for the book.

God Bless Leo Fender..I would still be a full time musician if it were not for him.

Jody, our beloved friend and patriarch. "Never fear, we hold you dear!" Speaking for myself, I certainly thought your original post was "in jest", and an effort to initiate some fun. So was my reply (notice the smilies). Frankly speaking, I've read every post you've made, on this and other topics, from start to finish. I can truthfully say that I've learned more from your posts, historically, about the instrument than from any other contributor.

I am always very glad when players such as yourself and Roy Ayres take the time to "tell it like it really was" during the infancy and development of the steel guitar. My reply post to your original topic opener was in the spirit of the season and I hope you take it in that manner.

A Texas sized prayer for you and your family to enjoy the best of the best and Happy New Year to you, bringing only what a super family such as yours deserve.

As a postscript, I can say that your prologue to Gene Jones' CD "Just For Me" also expresses the thoughts of many about this tremendous player.

Jody pal, you recall we discussed this decision of yours on the phone Christmas eve. You know how I feel. I can only echo the great value 95% of us place on you for your sincerity, friendship, informative views, and for just being "Jody Carver" on this Forum. Perhaps the time has arrived to concentrate all your efforts on far more important things such as your own health and that of your dear wife Marilyn.
That being the case, we will excuse you from the class just for the time being in anticipation of your welcomed return as soon as you feel up to it. Never doubt the love and friendship you have on this Forum. You are an icon in the steel guitar world whether or not you believe this to be so...more than that, you are my friend ! Luv ya guy ! Someday, somewhere, we'll have that jam session!
HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! (edited for sp.errors)

IM NEW TO THIS STEEL FORUM,AND MY ONE REASON
FOR JOINING WAS TO MEET UP WITH MY OLD FRIEND
JODY CARVER.

JODY AND MY DAD WERE FRIENDS FOR MANY YEARS,MY DAD WAS A PROFFESIONAL MUSICIAN WHO PLAYED TROMBONE WITH MANY OF THE WELL KNOWN BANDS DURING THE DAYS OF BIG BANDS.

WHEN THAT BECAME DIFFICULT FOR MY DAD TO DO,HE OPENED A MUSIC STORE. IT WAS THEN THAT
HE FIRST MET JODY WHO WAS A FENDER SALESMAN.

DUE TO THE FACT THAT MY DAD WAS A NEWCOMER TO THE WORLD OF RETAIL,NO ONE PAID ANY ATTENTION TO MY DADS REQUESTS TRYING TO BUY A NAME BRAND GUITAR AND AMPLIFIER.

HIS PRIMARY BUSINESS WAS THAT OF BRASS INSTRUMENTS.ALL MY DAD WANTED WAS A CHANCE.
NO ONE GAVE HIM THAT CHANCE UNTIL JODY CAME
ALONG.
I CAN ONLY RECALL WHAT MY DAD ALWAYS TOLD ME AND THAT IS,JODY IS THE MUSICIANS BEST FRIEND
AS WELL AS THE MUSIC STORE DEALERS BEST SALESMAN AND A HUMAN BEING OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY.

WHEN CBS TOOK OVER THE FENDER COMPANY,I WAS ABOUT 11 YEARS OLD.CBS WANTED TO DISCONTINUE
MY DAD AS A FENDER ACCOUNT AS THEY FELT THEY
WANTED THE BIGGER MUSIC STORES WITH MORE MONEY TO BUY INSTRUMENTS.

MY DAD TOLD ME HOW JODY WENT TO BAT FOR HIM IN SPITE OF CBS ROYALTY AND HE KEPT MY DADS BUSINESS AFLOAT.IF IT WERE NOT FOR JODY MY DAD WOULD HAVE NO GUITARS AND AMPS OF A WELL
KNOWN BRAND TO SELL.

IT WAS JODY WHO STOOD UP AGAINST THE BIG WIGS AT CBS AND KEPT MY DAD GOING.

MY DAD IS GONE NOW,BUT THE STORIES OF JODY WILL FOREVER BE ETCHED IN MY MEMORIES.

THE ONE THING MY DAD ALWAYS TOLD ME WAS.
YOU ALWAYS HAVE A GOOD FRIEND IN JODY,BE GOOD TO HIM.MY WIFE AND MYSELF ARE HAPPY TO ONCE AGAIN FOUND THIS GUY.

IM SORRY TO READ WHAT I JUST READ.HIS SENSE OF HUMOR SOMETIMES GETS THE BEST OF HIM,BUT MOST OF ALL,HIS HEART IS BIG AND TO THIS DAY,
LONG AFTER HIS DEPARTURE FROM THE MUSIC RETAIL BUSINESS,HIS NAME IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL.

I FEEL BAD AT WHAT I READ HERE. PERHAPS THOSE
WHO DONT KNOW JODY DONT REALLY UNDERSTAND HIM
AND THOSE WHO RAN HIM DOWN SHOULD BE ASHMAMED
OF THEMSELVES.

I SPOKE WITH JODY LATE LAST NIGHT AND HE TOLD
ME AND LISA OF THE UGLY E MAILS SENT TO HIM JUST AS SOON AS HE STARTED HIS STORY.

WHY DIDNT THOSE WHO ARE IGNORANT LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE.
HE AND HIS WIFE HAD HAD ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH THIS YEAR.IS THIS WHAT I HAVE TO LOOK FORWARD TO?. I HAVE NO REASON TO BE ON THIS AS IM NOT A STEEL GUITAR PLAYER BUT I ALWAYS
LOVED THE INSTRUMENT AND I HAVE THE VERY SAME
TWO NECK STEEL THAT JODY GAVE TO MY DAD YEARS AGO AND IM GOING TO LEARN TO PLAY IT.

THANK YOU

GREG & LISA SULLIVAN

TWO OF JODYS FANS. AND THERE ARE MANY MORE OUT THERE IN THE RETAIL WORLD WHO ARE AS WELL
MUSICIANS AND STORE OWNERS ALIKE.

...quote by Fred..As a postscript, I can say that your prologue to Gene Jones' CD "Just For Me" also expresses the thoughts of many about this tremendous player....

I'm not always checking the Forum, so not knowing what was said I say thanks to Fred, and also to Jody (whatever he said). I hope that if it was good that you didn't have second thoughts is why you deleted it!

In any event, I love you Jody....just as always! Gene Jones

I'd like to echo what Graham said. I'd also like to point out that those who are sending you the ugly emails are violating the law. It's the same thing as harassing phone calls. Jody, I urge you to show them to the police. They can do something about it. Don't let criminals keep you from something you love.

DAVE....Hey, that's a great idea. Go after those bastards who are harrassing our "hero". I can only echo what Greg has so beautifully written. Jody deserves our support and if anyone knows who in hell is sending these rotten e-mails to Jody, please let b0b know. They should not be a part of this Forum IMO. Canada and the US are "free" countries, but this type of behavior takes "freedom" over the line.

Jody:

You forgot to mention that Ramblin Jack Elliott is really Ramblin... (something-whatever).

To quote Ernest Tubb:

"There's a little bit of everything in Texas, and really I'm not braggin' you see. Just a little bit of everything in Texas, and a whole lot of Texas in me."

Sounds like some of that rubbed off on you. That's OK, pardner, I'm from Iowa originally, and most folks I know are from somewhere else. Thing is, once you're stuck here in Texas, it's so far to the state line in any direction, most folks just don't bother trying to leave. No biggie, there are enough foreigners here you never burn out on too many locals. Well, mostly never.
