In the thread about BJS bars, some people mentioned they had the bars with the gemstones embedded. It seems to me that this might inhibit playing with the nose of the bar. I sometimes do that, although I never use the actual tip.

Does anybody else do this, and if so, do you use a bar with a gemstone, and does the stone affect your playing?

Mike I guess Bill thought of this. He positioned the stone so you can use the nose
of the bar without a problem. I use the nose
of mine for single note runs that end up being sloppy but it has nothing to do with
my BJS bar.

Well, I've seen some players using the bar with the back end 'way up in the air...like at a 45 degree angle! With the nose tipped so far down, you might have a problem with that jewel...but I doubt it.

I personally don't find those steep angles necessary, though. A smaller angle (20-30 degrees) works just as well. The idea here is just to be hitting one or two strings, and to barely "clear" the rest of 'em.

No, but sometimes I play with my nose at the bar. It's kinda disgusting but some chicks dig it...

I have a birthstone in my BJS and I play with the tip all the time, no problem. You'd have to just about stand the bar up on end before you'd hit the stone.

Hey Mike,
I attempt to play some bluegrass tunes like Ol' Joe Clark etc. which uses hammer ons and pull offs with the tip of the bar. My BJS lost a stone from the tip one time but I don't know if that's what caused it. At Scotty's this year they replaced the stone for free and It's working great. I love this bar. I have 3 of them but I use the 10 string bar on my 12 string instead of the 12 string bar as it's too dang long. On swing stuff single note runs I use the tip also but as someone else said before, you really don't have to tip it up too awful much to do this.

I got my bar up my nose one time. Still haven't located it.

There are a few chords I play in non-pedal C6th where the bar is vertical to the strings with the nose playing two strings while four or more open strings ring. Don't try this at home.

No gemstone, but I learned the first part of SGR with the tip playing the single note stuff, with hammer ons. Otherwise, I always play with the bar flat on the strings. And now we'll hear from the guys who don't like to play SGR.

I tried using my nose, but playing by ear was a little less painful. At least, I could watch my right hand.

Seriously, I do raise my bar slightly at times, but not enough for the birthstone to be in the way.

Of course, doesn't everyone? But seriously folks, I do single string/note runs with the bar raised slightly.

Of course, there are the times when I got so drunk that I tried playing my steel with the nose on my face

I use the tip of the bar to play a few of the older "non-pedal" type instrumentals. My bar is a 15/16" BJS without a birthstone. Works slick.

Do I play with the noise of the bar? I get a lot of noise from my bar. It's a great bar (BJS 7/8" 10 string) so that's not the problem--I must not be pushing down hard enough.

Seriously, I've not gotten far enough along with the PSG to learn end-up or slant tricks.

Hey, wouldn't it be cool if instead of a gemstone someone put an LED in the nose of the bar? Yet another advancement in steel!

I hang at a lotta bars,& can play "musical nose. Now,let me explain. "Musical Nose" is a very versatile instrument 'cause, you can, either, pick it or blow it. (& you don't have to belong to ANY union to play it!)
