Kleinow, Hudson Launch Burrito Deluxe
Burrito Deluxe, a band featuring original members of the Flying Burrito Brothers and The Band, will release their debut album in early 2003. The group features steel guitarist Sneaky Pete Kleinow (who founded the Flying Burrito Brothers with Chris Hillman, Chris Ethridge and the late Gram Parsons) and Band keyboardist Garth Hudson. Other Burrito Deluxe members include Tommy Spurlock, Carlton Moody and Willie Watson. The group’s debut album, Georgia Peach, features guest appearances from Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Gib Guilbeau (who later joined the Flying Burrito Brothers) and Barry Bales (a member of Alison Krauss & Union Station). Georgia Peach is set for Feb. 28 release. 11/25/02

What will Tommy Spurlock be playing if Sneaky's on steel. Tommy is a very good steelman and has done some major session work in Nashville as well as touring with some of the acts on steel. I met him in LA about 18 years or so ago while he was playing lead guitar in a band which was working the Sunday and Monday night slots in a club I was working. His steel work is much more contemporary and up to date than Sneaky's although SP has his own sound for sure. Maybe that's what they're looking for. In any situation though, Tommy can handle the lead guitar chair as well as anyone. When his band did the Sunday afternoon show (DJ Ranch in Long Beach) he'd stay around sometimes after my group came on and watch me play steel. He mentioned one time that he played a little steel but I never thought much about it. I never saw him play until one time on the Nashville Network I saw him playing with Highway 101 and another time with Suzy Bogguss and still another time with Rodney Crowell. If I'd have known he played that good I'd have been intimidated back then......JH

FWIW, Garth Huson was in my town (Hamilton, Ontario) this Friday, playing a CD release party for his old bandleader Ronnie Hawkins. |
