Mark's new CD " The Ragpickers Dream" has
got some really great tunes, great Retro
tones on it from Mark and Paul,
It almost sounds like Paul is using some lapsteel into some old fender amp,the playing
and tone sounds 50 years old at times,
A CD worth owning, Greg |

Greg, is Paul up in the mix on this CD? On "Sailing . ." you pretty much could't hear him IMO. |

Yes he is, particularily on the retro
sounding stuff, however there is some stuff
like "Sailing" on it where he's quite subtle,
in the mix. its a very organic sounding
record, lots of vintage tones on it, I wouldn't say there's a wack of steel on it,
but placed nicely, Greg[This message was edited by Greg Derksen on 26 November 2002 at 05:53 AM.] |

Thanks for the info Greg. Maybe there's some samples of the tracks on somewhere. Sounds intriguing. |

I have the CD. it's an interesting mix of Brittish Isles and American idioms with a definite wistful quality to the writing. I would characterize it as being about the songs rather than having the tunes be a showcase for flashy steel or standard guitar solos. Both Mark & Paul have nothing to prove in that area so it's good to see the guitar work appropriately serve the message of the songs. I like subtle, background steel parts. I think that they are a "secret weapon" on a lot of the newer pop/rock records.
Thanks for the heads up on the Knopfler CD.

I recently bought this CD as well, PF is on about three tracks and stands out on only one - but even Knopflers' solo guitar work is understated. The songs stand up for themselves though, and overall the CD is very good.
