I am very interested in this concept. I have heard Donmo's round neck wood body tricones and Mike Dotson's Weissonator and like them very much.

http://www.fineresophonic.com/triplates.htm

This is a French company that builds wood body square neck tricones.
Anyone have any comments about or experiences with these guitars they'd like to share?

I've heard nothing but raves about Fine Resophonics, both for their sound and build quality.

Can I ask which Weiss' of mine you heard? Was it Howard's?

I believe it was yours, Mike! (From a sound clip of Open Sea Blues).

The Fine wood body tricone has sound, volume and general character you would expect from a good tricone. The difference is an increase in warmth and a decrease in the nasal quality that you get when you dig into the bass strings of a metal tricone. Altogether a very good sounding guitar.
All the cheapo oriental woodbody tricones I have tried have been very disappointing and don't give a hint of the sound of the Fine wood reso.

Thank you for the comments, Colin. Do you have one? I would be interested in hearing a clip or two if you have access to any kind of home recording gear.
Also I'm curious - what companies make "cheapo oriental woodbody tricones"? I've never seen one, and the whole concept of woodbody tricones I thought was pretty rare.

Wotcha Tim
Afraid I don't have a Fine tricone, but I do have a 1930 original. A man who does own one is Michael Messer, http://michaelmesser.co.uk/
Michael is probably the leading UK player of reso guitars. Check his site and ask him questions.
The oriental tricones to which I refered are sold in the UK under the name Ozark. Another maker of wooden tricones in the UK is a company called Delta. I have not played one of their guitars.
Another partly wood tricone I have played is the National tricone with a wood front that Bob Brozman played on one of the Tone Poems CDs. It surfaced in the UK in the early 80's. It looked like a shop project by a fairly inept 12 year old, and didn't sound too great. Last I heard it was for sale at a stiff price as the last real National.

I thought the name ... Michael Messer ... rang a bell ...

As Colin mentioned, John Alderson of Delta Resonator Guitars is building wood-body tricones in the U.K. He doesn't mention a squareneck, but I suspect he could be persuaded. There are sound clips on his site.

And that wood-top National tricone from "Tone Poems" is for sale again -- $9500.
