List of Top 10 Steel Tunes?

Post by Chet »

This must have been done a hundred times in the past... This may be the wrong place if so please move it.. I want to collect the ten - twenty Steel songs and either find their Music sheet or work a chord sheet up on them.. Can anybody steer me in the right direction?

Yes ask someone that dosn't play steel and see how long the list will be. You know they will say Sleepwalk, maybe The Steel Guitar Rag.WE NEED A NEW STEEL HIT! Boy I wish I could come up with some thing, but Im not that good. Maybe one of the top guns could do it.A number that would be big and sell and sell. Then everyone would know what a STEEL GUITAR is,Wake up Joe -I must be dreaming Image

Well, to be the devil's advocate, no wonder the steel guitar is dying. Almost all the tunes listed are 40 years old or more. There are many great players recording cool new instrumentals if anyone cares. At least go back to Lloyd Green's output, or Jimmy Crawford (and Russ Hicks), or how about Buddy Emmons' fairly recent "Triple Play".
Hal Rugg, John Hughey, Al Brisco, Jim Cohen, all record nice originals. Why do we live in the past so much?

I love steel guitar instrumentals too (even if I find them a bit depressing becuase they're so far above MY skills). But steel is really a bad instrument, and to me shines its best complementing a song and a vocalist. The new Hillman and Petersen CD (Way Out West) has some great steel.
