I just picked up a J. Bush CD titled "Green Snakes". All of the above are playing on the CD but it is mostly Overbey. This guy has a sweet tone and chops till the cows come home.
Emmons plays on one cut "Driving Nails" and does his usual jaw dropping break. This CD is dated 2001 and is on the "Lone Star" label. Bush is of course, stellar.
stevie likes it

Steve,
Were you lucky enough to get a copy with the bonus CD? If you did, what did you think of it?
Keep on pickin'!

Glenn, I have the bonus cd. The quality is spotty at best, but it is still a fascinating piece of history. Willie's playing is darn good, Morrell's playing is darn good, Johnny's singing is darn good, the songs are darn good, it just doesn't sound all that great. That being said, I love it!!! |

Chris,
I agree entirely with you. Johnny ought to get the master over to a studio and have it digitally processed and release it outright. I'd buy the cleaned up version in a NY second.
BTW: I'm hoping to get my copy autographed by Willie Nelson this weekend at our gig in Dallas.
Keep on pickin'!

Steve, I think only the first 3000 came with the bonus cd. I ordered mine the day it was released, so I was one of the lucky ones. |

Steve,
Check with area record stores. There may be some that received early shipments of this CD and still have one sittin' on the shelf. It's worth looking for. Besides, if you find and buy one with the bonus CD, you can always give the non-bonus CD to your best friend.
Keep on pickin'!

Jim,
I don't have the CD in front of me but, from memory, the bonus CD was a demo recording done in Ft. Worth in the early 60's. the only credits listed are Johnny (vocals), Willie Nelson (guitar) and Tom Morrell (steel guitar). The rest of the band may have been from Price's band. Herb might know for sure.
The songs are all classic honky-tonk. Many sound as though they came from the pen of Willie Nelson. Some did I believe. IMHO, if this recording were to be digitally re-mastered (it's rather muffled sounding) it would be right up there with all the great honky-tonk albums of that era.
It reminds me of Willie Nelson's "demo" recorded about that same time. You might know of it: "Face of a Fighter" released in 1978?? on the now-defunct Lone Star Records label. The bandmates on that recording are from Price's Cherokee Cowboys (Jimmy Day on steel). BTW: If you don't have "Face of a Fighter" and you ever come across it anywhere, drop everything you're doin' and BUY IT!! You won't be sorry.
Keep on pickin'!
