Hey everyone. I dragged my steel and amp into where the computer is, and hooked up a Peavey mic up to the soundcard (with a connecter which makes a 1/4" cord to a 1/8" - the size of a headphone jack). Anyway, I recorded it on a free program, Quartz AudioMaster. I saved it as a WAV, and it had a bunch of hiss. LOTS! But, thankfully, I recieved a demo copy in the mail of Cool Edit Pro 2.0. It has a hiss reduction feature. It cleared it all up. Hiss reduction is the only effect used on this file. It's a pretty good quality sound for spending no money and doing it at home!!
Anyway,
I recorded a C6th do-dad and I think you'll enjoy it. If you can't get it to open, tell me and I'll fix it. Also, sorry in advance about the geocities ad!
Thanks to whomever it was that came up with the idea to post MP3's on this forum. I think it's great! I've listened to everyone posted. Really good idea.

Reggie, I play an MSA Vintage XL (80's model I'm guessing - Bought at Steel Guitar Nashville)
I use an Earnie Ball Volume Pedal, Cobra Coil Strings, and a Crate Amp. No effects processors or anyhing.

| Sounds nice. Is that natural ambience i hear(you say no reverb)? Have you ever looked into a direct box or guitar cab sim? It might help you control your sound and avoid clipping when recording. |

You're right. I forgot about reverb as an effect. Sorry. I don't understand what you mean by clipping. Please exlain.

I really want to get into recording, and I think this is the best way to do it. I'm very very serious about making pro quality sounding recordings. (When I say pro quality, what I mean is, IN THEORY, An engineer that knows exactly what he's doing could record a pro quality album with pro musicians with this sytem for the big boys, and all they'd have to do is have it mastered.) I have about half the money saved up! I've been washing and polishing and waxing Semi Trucks on weekends when I'm not playing. It's helped me out.
I know I've got a lot to learn, but, hey, I really want to do this. I can play all the instruments myself, except drums. I'll get a drum machine. Actually, steel is my worst instrument, because I haven't played it very long, and it's a complicated instrument to the average musician. I play piano, bass, guitar, and sax much better. (I don't mean to sound braggy at all, because I'm not.)I feel this will broaden my musical repitwa (That's way off on spelling I'm sure).
Man, do I go on and on! It feels good to let it all out. hehe |

| Abraham...worth the wait to download on my slow old computer. As I listen to your piece, I think you might like one of my favourite players if you don't know him already....check out Bill Stafford's playing since I think you might like his style...gorgeous phrasing and tone. He did the soundtrack to "My Own Private Idaho" which is primarily solo steel guitar. I am jealous of your computer setup. Who would have thought this possible a few years ago? Nice work. |

| Abraham, by clipping i mean overloading the recording input and causing digital distortion. If you want to achieve a good sound for your steel, guitars, etc. You'll have to find good amps, play loud, and mic them correctly. You can elimnate this process by using direct boxes and/or amp/cab simulating effect boxes. You dial in the sound you want and record through it. No noise to bother the folks or neighbors. Just something for you to investigate. These things may come as plugins with the computer recording package you eventually purchase. Or you can buy dedicated boxes. |
