I really enjoyed the interesting comments about Johnny Paycheck playing steel. It has been written that Marty was a good steel artist and would get Porter or other ballod singers at the Opry to jam with him backstage so he could enjoy backing them on steel. Have any of you jammed with him, and what are your experiences and thoughts of Marty playing steel. Wish he had played a tune on steel at the performances I had the pleasure of watching or n the TV show he had in the 6o's!

I had heard that Marty Robbins played steel on "The Shoe goes On The Other Foot Tonight", but I don't know if that's true.

The steel guitar on "Shoe" was played by Bill Johnson. I own the 65 Emmons that the solo was played on.

I have two Hawaiian albums that are collaborations between Marty Robbins and Jerry Byrd. They are technically Marty Robbins albums, but Jerry co-wrote many of the songs and every track has a beautiful steel solo.

I didn't know until now that he played steel, but Marty Robbins was obviously a big steel guitar fan.

I really hadn't known he played steel, but I do recognize that, along with "Shoe", another one of his records featured steel, as well..."Among My Souveniers".

I have a video Marty & Jerry made at some point. Shows some nice shots of Jerry's lap steel technique! Great bar handling etc! Made
@ dock side (or reasonable facimile thereof!)

Will appreciate it.

I have jammed with Marty several times in Mr. Acuffs dressing room in 1976-77. He was playing Oswalds Dobro. One of the highlights of my whole life!

Here's a interesting bio on Robbins on Kristy's Marty Robbins Page located at:
http://members.aol.com/kkcowgirl/mrobbins.htm

"The Navy: At the age of seventeen, Marty joined the Navy. He served three years, two of which were spent in the South Pacific. During the early years of World War II, Marty drove landing craft that was responsible for carrying soldiers to the beaches during a battle over the Solomon Islands.

It was while in the Navy that Marty first became serious about being a singer/songwriter. To help pass the time, he began playing guitar and writing songs. A brief visit to Hawaii before his 1945 discharge left him with a love for Hawaiian music, which would prove useful later on."

An interesting guy who lived an interesting life. It's not surprising that he was a fan of the steel guitar.

The LPs with Jerry Byrd are "Song of the Islands" and "Hawaii's Calling Me".

Apparently they've been combined and reissued on CD by Bear Family as BCD 15568. There are some additional tracks as well.

On the old Marty Robbins TV Shows, on one show Marty sat down at Bill's steel and did pretty good on C6..Jody.

Okay, just spoke w/ Don Helms. The steel on "Hawaii's Calling Me",is,definitely,Jerry Byrd, which I already knew. The steel on,"Song Of The Islands",could be Jim Farmer, who worked w/ Marty until he (Jim) retired. Then, Bill Johnson took his place. The steel on that album sounds very "Little Roy-ish",so Don said that it could, very well,be Farmer.
(updates as I try to find out more.)

I know that Jerry and Jimmy both cut Hawaiian albums with Marty. I don't know who played on what but, to my knowledge, Jerry only cut one album with Marty. How about it Ray...????

In the late sixies I was working with another opry artist, and had the honor of seeing Marty come out when George Morgan would be singing, and play Little Roy Wiggins steel behind George.Sounded good to me. Never heard him play pedal steel.Great guy also. Max

Sorry I just now noticed this thread . . .
The keyboard (then known as 'organ') player in my first band was Marty's son, Ronnie and we practiced there several times. I remember seeing a steel set up in the basement. Only thing I remember was it was on legs and it was a Fender. I was very aware of the Fender brand since I had just gotten my first Strat, so it was probably '64 or so (wish I still had that Strat). FWIW.

"Song of the Islands" includes a Jerry Byrd tune called "Moonland". I guess I jumped to conclusions.

Right. I just listened to it again and it's real good steel playing, but it's not Jerry Byrd. Sorry for creating confusion. I'll crawl back into my hole now.

Does anyone know who plays steel on Marty Robbin's "Crying Steel Guitar Waltz"?

I have the Bear Family CD of Marty Robbins here in front of me. 28 songs total. Crying Steel Guitar Waltz features on the steel,Jimmy Farmer, plus Jimmy plays on 11 other Hawaiian songs. 2 Hawaiian songs with Joe Vincent on steel. 14 songs feature Jerry Byrd. Jerry is also listed as writer on 6 songs. There is one statement in the booklet from Jerry Byrd, "Marty played the steel guitar". It is a great CD and Marty could really sing the Hawaiian style. Al.
