Smiley and I have been best of friends for a while now and never miss the oportunity to pull each others legs.....but just for once...and I mean only once I would like to say something nice about him.
Friday....I recieved two C.D.s from him.....after much cajoling, begging, pleading and threatening to move in next door to him......as I already have a tape of his studio work with Chubby Checker and his own Gospel stuff on the other side..I already new how fantastic his steel playing was...but still the C.D of his studio work behind various artists was well worth all my threats and pleas....Marvelous!
But the biggest suprise was the one of him singing....BLOODY AWESOME !!!!!
I seriously think....and I have told him.......that if he had been nice and learned how to kiss the rear end of some of those 'suits' in Gnashville he could have forgotten about being a sideman and would have given a few people like Ray Price a run for their money!
OK thats me finished.....I hearby declare the national "Be Nice To Smiley' day closed!

I missed out on the "Be Nice to Smiley Day"... Rats! I know I could have thought of something nice to say, if I would have only known it was coming up so soon. I'll think some more about it and save it for next year. Guess now it's back to poking a little fun at our mustacheoed friend.

I've met some great people through this Forum and made some wonderful friends here, the first being Tony who started this thread and it was he who "introduced" me to Smiley. When John and I went to St Louis a couple of years ago we met Smiley and when we travlled to Nashville after the St Louis show Smiley took us under his wing and showed us around, took us to a show and generally put himself at our disposal. It was terrific to have a tour guide but the best part was having such a friendly, cheerful person with us all the time. Smiley, you may come across on here as a complete nut with a crzy take on life but those who know you know that you are a really genuine man and a true friend.
Now seeing as Tony Davis declared "Be Nice to Smiley Day" open and shut all in one go I am here to declare it re-opened as he was going by his time zone which is as screwed up as himself (sorry Tony, I just couldn't resist that). It's a public holiday here tomorrow so I think we should carry it on until the early hours of Tuesday at the very least. |

I just got off the phone with the Smiles man and he hadn't seen this thread yet but it won't be long until he does. I spent yesterday afternoon and evening with this national phenomenon and my sides are still hurting from laughing with AND AT him! He is a "one man show" anywhere he goes but the funniest part is he is totally innocent in his actions and thinking. THAT is what helps make him so damn funny. He finally sat down last night beside my wife and within 3 minutes, was sound asleep (says alot about my wife doesn't it?). Hal Rugg saw this Kodak moment in the making and tried to find a marker and paper to make a sign and lay across his chest saying "Will Work for Food" but couldn't get the job done before he came back to life. Hal did ammend his previous statement saying in Smilie's case, the sign would read "Will Work For Steak, Medium Well"! After all, he's the only guy I know that spent 40 minutes trying to show Ernest Tubb a chord change during one of his sessions afterwhich ET turned and told the band "all right boys, play it just like Smiley said to do it" totally changing what the band had already worked up! (a funny story from Lynn Owsley)
Happy Smiley Day, Smiley!!!!!!! |

Having had a chance to hear Smiley sing in person, and on tape. I agree that if he had chosen to be up front, he would have been very successful! My wife, and I have also had the Nashville tour, with Smiley as our guide. As have many, many others. We feel very fortunate for our friendship with him. He'll be at the Mass Bash Sept. 29th. Let's go up there, and see if we can get him to sing a song, or two!!! Leigh |

Hey Jody!.....I have never tried Baloney...dont even know what it looks like...but I have sure read a lot of it on this forum.....but I like a very varied diet...you know.Steak and Chips (Fries)...or Chips (Fries) and Steak.....just cant take anything with spices or all those foriegn flavours.....I have been told that I am the most boring diner ever......food for me is just to stop the sides of my stomache rubbing together.....just to stoke the fire
