Just got the July Offbeat Magazine(New Orleans arts and entertainment monthly), and it had a 3 page interview w/ RR. I was really impressed w/ this kids maturity, and kinda pissed at the interviewers misconception that he grew up in a monastary or something and acting like the kid had never seen the outside world. "Speaking of the road, how does someone who grew up in the sheltered house of god enviornment handle the temptations of touring". BS like that. He handled em pretty well, and stated the gospel singers probably get laid more than rock stars. Probably true!
Anyway, here are 2 quotes that I thought you guys would appreciate!
Do you listen to those country PSG players?
Oh Yeah, I listen to a lot of those guys.....Buddy Emmons, Loyd Green, Speedy West, people like that. Actually, over the years Ive gotten close w/ those country PSG guys, theyve been really supportive. Its not an instrument you see played on TV all the time. So its a possitive thing to see it played on the Jamband scene, the rock scene, the hip-hop scene.
What are your major carear goals?
I'd like to start a trend where it wont be just sacred steel players and country/western guys playing my instrument. I want to see young white kids in the suburbs playing PSG, Japaneese kids, Jamaican kids.....let it be like the piano, like the guitar. It can fit into any style of music. I want to take the instrument to the highest level of visibility possible. Where people can play it, where people can hear the sound and love it, and just enjoy it as much as I do.
WELL SAID RR!! CANT WAIT TO SEE HIM AT THE HOUSE O BLUES THIS MONTH!!!!!

Nice post Matt. Seems like Robert might be our best shot at someone in the PSG world turning people on to the Steel.
He is mentioned in the last two issues of Entertainment weekly, so he is making some big waves out there.
As for the interviewer's mention of him growing up sheltered, I don't think so, Robert grew up around Newark and has seen alot more than most of us. It's a good thing that he used his talents in a positive way.

Yeah, that was my point. These interviewers hear that they come from a gospel background and assume that they grew up secluded from modern world. Check out some of the neighborhoods around the baptist churches in New Orleans, and that is a real/rough place to grow up.
All the press he has been getting lately show his bio photo where you can clearley read "fessenderen Guitar" on the pic.
