Tommy White on the Opry

For those who didn't tune in, you missed a fantastic show tonight and Tommy was largely responsible for it. He played beautifully behind Kellie Coffey and then literally cut loose with the Gatlin Brothers. He was playing his new Carter and it sounded GREAT! It was evident that he was really getting into his playing and enjoying what he was doing. Tommy really shined tonight and I felt that he deserved the praise for it. Tommy, great playing on a beautiful guitar even if you are older than me!!

But I saw some of the lineup so turned it on. Glad I did.

Tommy was right up there. He was really swinging with Larry Gatlin, on that Carter and it did sound great....al

(Actually, I did send one a few weeks ago, telling them that I hoped they were aware of what kind of treasure they had there on staff, in the tradition of the great Opry players of the past and I'd sure like to see more of him on the TV portion ((portain)). They responded that they agreed. Have no idea what that's worth.)

Right on....this was the best Opry show in a long long time.Glad to finally hear TW smoke on that Carter.After the telecast I tuned in WSM via my pc to listen to more...the rest of the night was pretty good as well.

I don't have cable so I don't get to see the opry. But I do know that Tommy White is an incredible steel player. He is as fast (and clean) as the Pennsylvania turnpike.

Just love to watch his fluid motion.

Jean's steeler is the fantastic Dave Robbins. Mark's is Slim Yamaguchi (sp?), another great player.

I enjoyed Kelly Coffey also. What a treat. I was in the kitchen (avoiding the dumb blonde interviewing Chestnut) when she started singing. My first thought was that it was Kathy Mattea. It was nice to see someone with genuine talent that didn't have her body parts about to fall out (not that I don't like to see that stuff) of her outfit.

Tommy White? What else can be said about this man other than he is one of the true greats. Glad to see him playing a Carter, too.

Just watched the tape. Great show!
I think this is the first time we got to hear Tommy play his new axe.

Nice camera angles too. This is why I always tape the show. Ya never know when you'll get a gem.

I would so much desire to be within ear-shot, when The Gatlins try to digest the superb showmanship of Tommy White, together with the tasty backup that he so generously laid upon them. Larry is an excellent front person, and Tommy has enriched his image, I M H O.

Ha! I was born and raised in Philly and I can tell you that equating Tommy's playing to the Pennsy Turn Pike is not a compliment.

Historical side note: The Pennsy Turn Pike was built so that Tom Jefferson,George Washington,John Hancock, etc. could get back and forth from Harrisburg to Philly.After a few years the turn pike was extended from Harrisburg to Ohio because Cleveland was a well known vacation spot for our founding fathers in the 1700's. At least that's what they told me in school.

OK gents. Seems like we want to do a description of Tommy's pickin' and I've been on the Pa.t turnpike. Kind of an insult to Tommy, really. I found Tom very smooth or maybe even slick. THerefore I'll throw out this just to see what you think.

Hm the last time I was on the translyvania turnpick was with Smiley Roberts driving.

. Needless to say I didn't get too good a look at the surroundings. I was much too busy watching the Tractor trailers get out of Smileys way.They were friendly about it tho,they kept singling him that he was #1.They must have meant it because they were using their biggest finger.

Back to Tommy white. He is probably the main reason I look in on the schedule.When I see there is a chance he will pick I glue myself to the chair.....

Now, I'm all in favor of the Carters and may get one myself but I have a lot of TV shots of Tommy plus owning his E9th licks video black P/P Emmons but do I sound like him? No. He makes anything he plays sound like it's made of gold and that goes back to the sound is in the man. I agree the new Carters sound and play great but don't think it's a magic pill to sound like "The Man" himself. If he switches to the Acme brand that Wiley Coyote would play, I am sure it will sound as good as it gets. Thanks Tommy for showing us what can be done, Gary.
